Beyond the math and science and literacy that students are learning this year, we have put an emphasis on leadership. Leaders are change-makers. Great leaders inspire others to lead. Our goal is to become great leaders.
"Make a Gift for Your Family Day" was inspired by an idea brought forward by Student Council to have every student in the school create a decoration for their family.
The intermediate classes took on this challenge to develop their leadership skills. They taught themselves how to create origami stars. We determined that a successful "outcome" was that every student at DeWitt Carter would complete a decoration.
Afterwards, students reflected on the experience from two perspectives: their own leadership, and characteristics of good learners. Listening to students describe "the ideal learner" and see awareness dawning about their own behaviour as a learner was an incredibly important part of the process. Now the challenge is to use these reflections to be "always better".
You are all "stars"!
We had an amazing experience learning to cook spaghetti sauce from scratch today! Chef Betty Barwell spent the morning with us leading students through every step of making homemade sauce. We learned how to dice onions, peel garlic easily, take the skins off fresh tomatoes and so much more. We all sat down to enjoy a meal of spaghetti together at the end.
We would like to thank Chef and Mrs. McIntyre for volunteering their time to give us such a wonderful learning experience.
One of the most relevant skills set out in the Ontario Math Curriculum is the focus on financial literacy. This includes the ability to plan and manage expenses relevant to students' lives.
On Tuesday, we have a special guest chef who will be using the fresh basil from our NutriTower in a cooking class for students to teach them how to make spaghetti sauce!
Today, students will be estimating the cost of the ingredients and using Google Sheets to create a spreadsheet to calculate the cost per serving.
