Because I'm new to the business venture world, I have been reading articles from Inc.com, a website dedicated to small business ideas and resources for entrepreneurs. This website showcases articles that focus on leadership (one that our class will read on Wednesday) and all aspects of success. Recently, I read an article that refers to a 75-year Harvard Grant Study (the longest running longitudinal study in history spanning 75 years from 1938 to the present), in which researchers identified two things that people need in order to be happy and successful.
If you want to know what those two things are, you need to read the article here.
We had an opportunity to try out curling today with the Rocks and Rings program.
Today we reviewed all 10 of the required sections of a business plan for our business venture and had more discussion about our key metrics, costs, and sources of revenue. Now the task is to use the information to create a business plan.
We also discussed the format for the business plan (see examples in the image opposite) and that it is critical to have correct conventions.
In class today we reflected on the 5 signs of good leadership and then set our own goals. One of the signs that was a bit surprising was that good leaders are also good listeners.

Today we collaborated (again) with Ms. Bergen's grade 4 class on a communication and leadership activity. The grade 4's had invented a game that they needed to communicate clearly to the grade 7/8s.
Before heading to the gym, intermediate students reflected on the roles of "leaders" and "learners". We realize that when both roles function effectively, we have fun. We'll share our reflections on the activity with the grade 4's
There was a LOT of fun happening during the collaboration!
Grade 8 students are preparing to demonstrate their understanding of population patterns. The test will be on Friday November 29. One of the guiding questions is why population patterns and growth are important. In our group discussions, we shared our understanding of the big ideas as well as real-life examples.
The "big ideas" are:
why humans settle more in some parts of the world than in others
patterns and trends in population distribution and density
influences of natural and human factors in determining settlement patterns
how to use chloropleth maps to analyze data
Our business plans are due on Wednesday December 4.
We're using our graphic organizers to record ideas and the final business plan will be written in 10 sections using the headings from the lean canvas model. It is important to be creative, realistic and specific with the business plan, as well as to focus on proper conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation, paragraphs etc.)
Since the presentation by Brock University last week, we have been spending a lot of time as a class discussing the components of the lean canvas business plan model. An important part of those conversations centred around our "key metrics". We had to ask ourselves what our goals are and how we're going to measure out success.
Another exciting part of the business plan assignment is for each of us to come up with a name for our business.
We are wrapping up our values presentations to other classes at Glynn A Green, with only a handful of classes left. Today Cole, Christian and Pierson presented to the kindergarten classes. It is a difficult idea to unpack for 4-5 year olds, but everyone walked away with a new understanding.
We are looking forward to unveiling our final project the evening of the Winter Concert on December 18.
