We are getting a jump on the first day of spring by planting basil and spinach seeds. In 8-10 days, our seeds should germinate.
In the words of Albert Einstein, "We cannot solve our problems with the same kind of thinking we used when we created them". We are learning how important it is to be part of an environment that encourages people to be creative if we want to be able to find solutions to difficult problems. Leaders need to inspire and support others to think creatively. Some of the ways we can do this are to:
minimize bias, ego and snap judgments
understand that people need different conditions to be creative (some need quiet, some don't)
create flexible work spaces
give people time to think
collaborate
Building our creativity "muscles" takes practice, so we did 2 challenges today.
Challenge 1 was to come up with at least 30 different creative uses for a paper clip. In this image, you can see Julia & Abbie's list.
Challenge 2 was to create 4 congruent, equilateral triangles using 6 popsicle sticks. This is still a work in progress!
Although most of us have first-hand experience with arguing, we are learning about what makes a convincing argument. We have been practising writing and presenting convincing arguments in preparation for our debate unit.
Ms Rossi joined our class again today to guide us through the next step in our "UnLearn" journey. The purpose of this project is to challenge our thinking and biases through interpreting images and giving us an opportunity to discuss our thoughts and ideas.
We will be incorporating UnLearn ideas as we explore our dance and debate units.
We are exploring ideas about fractions. One important idea is that the "whole" matters. For example, if someone asked if you wanted half a cake or a quarter of a cake, it would make a big difference if the 1/2 a cake was a cupcake!
We are using patterning blocks to experiment with different "whole" representations (see image)
