Ryan is sailing his C420 in the Fall Cork Regatta and will be away Thursday and Friday.
We wish him the best in his competition
Students are preparing for a math assessment on Thursday September 26. We have been doing "entry cards" to check understanding of percent and patterning. We talked about the value of having their reflection journals available during the assessment if necessary.
We watched a TED talk by the founder of Khan Academy, Salman Khan (click here). The focus of the talk was on what it means to master a concept. We reflected on many aspects of his talk and how thinking about mastering what we learn is very different from "sort of" understanding.
We discussed the differences between the kind of careers people might have had in the 20th century compared to the 21st century. In the future, people may actually be able to create their own jobs. We discussed the 5 competencies that are important for our success and reflected on which ones we feel we already demonstrate and which ones we need to work on.
We are continuing to investigate patterns and learning to create graphs from equations and interpret graphs to determine the multiplier and constant for a relationship
Today the grade 8's read an article about why maggots could revolutionize the global food supply.
We learned that the larvae of the black soldier fly are really healthy because they have a lot of calcium which other mealworms and crickets do not. They live on garbage and are really high in protein. This makes them great food for exotic pets such as lizards, birds and even hedgehogs.
You can read more about this (here).
Welcome to our class. Today in math we are learning composite rules. So since we learned how a composite rule works, we decided to try them on these patterns.
We learned that a composite rule has two parts Such as 5n+1.
So far this year we have also learned some different ways to learn percent. There are lots of ways to learn percent here a picture of the visual model:
