We have been practising converting units of measurement for area. What's challenging is that we are so good at converting units of linear measurement (ie. converting centimeters to meters or millimeters to centimeters etc) that we fall into the trap of doing the same thing for converting area units.
Here is a sample question from our test today:
We all know how to do this and it would be great to have an opportunity to explain our answers to parents!
Today Dan Lonergan and David DiPietro spent a couple of hours in our class helping us understand how to develop a business plan for our aquaponics business venture. They shared a graphic organizer for a one-page business plan called the Lean Canvas model.
As we started writing out our "problem" (ie. what our business is and why we're doing it) Dan and David helped us be very specific about our business. We still need to work on identifying and explaining our key metrics, competitors, our unique value proposition, sales channels, customer profile, costs and revenue streams.
Over the week, we will each be working on our own business plans. Lots of incredible learning for all of us today!
We just starting to work on short dramatic presentations.
The idea is to take a seasonal story or song (The Hockey Sweater, Frozen, Elf, Jingle Bells etc.) and turn it into a 2-minute drama. This is going to be a fun way to develop our dramatic skills!
We will all present our 2-minute dramas in class on December 11 and some groups may decide to share their mini dramas at the Winter Concert on December 18
We did a measurement scavenger hunt to see how good we are at estimating measurements. We were really good at estimating linear measurements.
What we realized is that we need to build some "benchmarks" for area measurements so we can make better estimates. For example, if we know that the area of a piece of paper is about 600 square centimetres, then we can make better estimates of the area of the top of our laptops or a floor tile.
We wrote area benchmarks in our Reflection Journals to refer to when calculating area to make sure our answers make sense.
Mrs. Gibson from EL Crossley was at Glynn A Green today to help grade 8 students make course selections for grade 9. This is just the first step in the transition to high school.
Next steps for grade 8's are to have discussions with parents about course selections (pink forms were sent home today) and to attend EL Crossley's Open House on November 26 @ 6pm.
Course selections will be finalized by December 10
