In last week's blog post, I shared Jo Boaler's article on the importance of struggle in learning.
This week, I want to share 2 resources that provide insight into the "teen brain". Research published in the last 10 years has helped us understand how the growth of brain matter and formation of new connections (proliferation), the pruning of unused connections and the process of insulating brain pathways to make them more stable (myelination) affect how teen brains work.
To understand more about what goes on in a teen brain, you can watch the CBC Nature of Things documentary here and review a 23-page slide show here
Author Nikolai Popov grew up in Russia during the Second World War. His experiences inspired him to write the picture book Why? to help both children and adults understand the senselessness of war and how easily we can get sucked in to the cycle of violence. His hope is that we all become "forces of peace".
His book has no words. We are working on a creative task to write a new last page to Popov's picture book.
