At least half of my BSc courses at university were math courses. You would think that someone who loves Math as much as I do would be good with money. Unfortunately, this hasn't always been true. When I was a single geologist working in the oil industry, I didn't spend beyond my means, but I sure spent everything I made. If I could pay my mortgage in shoes, I'd have most of it paid off. For 23 years, I was happy to let my husband manage our finances. When he passed away, I needed to finally address my financial phobia. It's a work in progress ... something for which my 26-year old accountant son holds me, well, accountable.
This time of year is particularly challenging when spending money is so closely tied with our feelings about the season. The mission of the Canadian Foundation for Economic Education (CFEE) is to promote financial literacy among all Canadians. The "Talk With Kids About Money" website (click here) has timely and appropriate articles and activities to develop financial literacy and confidence in managing money.
In class this week, we will be spending time developing and practising strategies that use proportional reasoning to determine the "best deal". (Do you know which size of Tim Horton's coffee is the best deal?? We do!)
This article on using technology to manage and track spending over the holiday season has some great ideas for everyone (click here).
We discussed the purpose and criteria for designing an effective logo for Gator Gardens. One of the most important criteria is to keep in mind who our target customer is. We will be sharing our designs with the ComTech class at EL Crossley for feedback.
These are the first drafts of logos by Rylee, Reese and Hailey.
After our vote this morning, we are excited to share the official name for our business! Our aquaponics business is now officially Gator Gardens. This was a very popular choice. We had a total of 24 different names to choose from (they are listed in the image opposite). Now that we have a name, we will be designing our logo using digital apps and working on our pitch presentations to potential investors.
At the Winter Concert on Wednesday December 18, Lily and Juliette will be presenting their version of "A Charlie Brown Christmas", Kaitlyn and Kaycie will be presenting "The Gift of the Magi" and Hailey, Madison and Eden will be performing their vignette of the movie "Elf".
We have presented our values presentations to all classes at Glynn A Green and have taken photos of everyone with what they value. We are waiting on the experts at Media Services to create digital mock-ups of our "What We Value at Glynn A Green" banners.
Stephen Covey published his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in 1989. In this classic book, Covey explains how to find balance between achieving your goals and caring for others through 7 specific habits.
In 1998, Stephen's son Sean wrote a companion book for teens. In teen-friendly language and with teen-friendly examples, Sean explains how to build 7 habits that will help improve self-image, build friendships, resist peer pressure, achieve goals, get along with parents and succeed at school.
We are starting with understanding what a "personal bank account" is and Habit #1: Being Proactive. Along with summarizing key ideas, we will be setting small and manageable personal goals for each of the 7 habits.
This book would make a fantastic gift for any teen. There is also a personal workbook version that has great reflection prompts and activities.
