The dowel tree project has been an amazing opportunity for us to learn new skills (sawing and using a drill press) and use our understanding of measurement and fractions to solve a real-life problem.
We should be finished the project by next week and we will post photos of our work.
The Pixar movie "Soul" was released in 2020 and it is both amazingly creative and thought-provoking. The story follows main character Joe Gardner as he realizes the differences between what he "wants" and what he "needs".
We have been working all year on plot development and character development in our narrative writing. Our next step is to write a script (imagining a final "new" chapter of the Will Wilder novel we read earlier in the year.
You can watch a great explanation of character development based on the movie "Soul" here.
This week we are presenting our choreographed dance works based on ideas from our UnLearn discussions. We want to communicate our thoughts and feelings about one of the posters by using the 5 elements of dance: body, action, space, time and energy
We talk a great deal in class about how "knowledge does not equal understanding". For example, knowing the rules of a basketball game doesn't equal being a great basketball player.
This is particularly important for us to know as mathematicians. Knowing the strategy (or "algorithm") for dividing fractions does not mean that we understand what dividing fractions actually means or how to recognize a problem that requires us to divide fractions.
We are spending a lot of time and practice making sure we not only know how to divide fractions, but we can represent division of fractions visually and solve related word problems.
