Read Online and Download Rubyfruit Jungle: A Novel by Rita Mae Brown. “The rare work of fiction that has changed real life . . . If you don’t yet know Molly Bolt—or Rita Mae Brown, who created her—I urge you to read and thank them both.â€â€”Gloria Steinem  Winner of the Lambda Literary Pioneer Award | Winner of the Lee Lynch Classic Book Award  A landmark coming-of-age novel that launched the career of one of this country’s most distinctive voices, Rubyfruit Jungle remains a transformative work more than forty years after its original publication. In bawdy, moving prose, Rita Mae Brown tells the story of Molly Bolt, the adoptive daughter of a dirt-poor Southern couple who boldly forges her own path in America. With her startling beauty and crackling wit, Molly finds that women are drawn to her wherever she goes—and she refuses to apologize for loving them back. This literary milestone continues to resonate with its message about being true to yourself and, against the odds, living happily ever after.  Praise for Rubyfruit Jungle  “Groundbreaking.â€â€”The New York Times  “Powerful . . . a truly incredible book . . . I found myself laughing hysterically, then sobbing uncontrollably just moments later.â€â€”The Boston Globe  “You can’t fully know—or enjoy—how much the world has changed without reading this truly wonderful book.â€â€”Andrew Tobias, author of The Best Little Boy in the World  “A crass and hilarious slice of growing up ‘different,’ as fun to read today as it was in 1973.â€â€”The Rumpus  “Molly Bolt is a genuine descendant—genuine female descendant—of Huckleberry Finn. And Rita Mae Brown is, like Mark Twain, a serious writer who gets her messages across through laughter.â€â€”Donna E. Shalala“A trailblazing literary coup at publication . . . It was the right book at the right time.â€â€”Lee Lynch, author of Beggar of Love
I liked this book and its flinty protagonist, Molly. She's sassy, independent, and she doesn't take any crap from anybody. Her adventures in Florida and the Big Apple are picaresque and well-drawn---and man, does this gal know how to wreak revenge. Her pranks and antics had me rolling in the aisles. So I admire her brio, her bravura, and dare I say it---her balls. What I dislike: she's just too conceited. Her head is so big that she couldn't fit through a doorway and her mouth so outsized she could eat a banana sideways. After awhile, I tired of hearing about her academic and athletic prowess, her dark beauty, and her sculpted, muscular body. Also, it's more interesting when a character has some kind of personal arc. I know this is a memoir, but Molly starts out rock hard and stays that way: never is she troubled in the least by doubt or uncertainty. Victims are boring, but so are the overconfident and cocksure. In addition, Brown's writing is not that strong. The tenses waver and the grammar is sketchy. Still, I recommend this coming of age memoir, because Brown is a entertaining and wicked wit.
I love a good light weight paperback that you can carry in your purse wherever you go! This book was a very easy read. Only took me about 3 days without having to force myself. I'm not a big reader, so that's a big deal. It was entertaining, and SURPRISINGLY sensitive for the the year that it was written. The N word pops up about 2-3 times, but it's always by some racist that you're supposed to hate. I was expecting race and gender to be handled very poorly, but I was pleasantly surprised how sensitive the book was. One slip up: I always hate it when brown people's skin is described using lattes and food, but for the year it was written, I can overlook that particular shortcoming. Strongly recommend it!
I understand that the book is important for having addressed lesbianism and feminism at a time when those subjects were not much discussed. In that sense, it's a groundbreaking book, and I respect that, On the other hand, I simply did not like the protagonist, Molly. She is extremely scornful of those who do not share her own views about what is and is not a worthwhile life, and she can be truly cruel at times. She's is simply not someone I would want to spend time with.
part of my disappointment with this novel is that i hyped myself up for it and it didnt meet my expectations. but truthfully i just didnt love the whole storyline. writing style was excellent and i felt that many things resonated with me about the lesbian experience, but i really didnt like some of the author’s choices concerning the plot and character developments. oh and of course that two 11-12 year olds have sex, as well as two 13-14 year old COUSINS have sex.
I picked this up after I read about it in a book about pop and pulp genre fiction, about it's importance as a ground-breaking lesbian novel. My wife had read it and said that I probably wouldn't like it. I'd been aware of it for years but had had the impression that it was a woman's book--like The Guns of Navarone, for example, could be said to be a man's book.By the end of the novel, my wife was right: I didn't like it. Molly is supposed to be unlikeable, though, so Brown's point was made quite strongly in me. I doubt the character is really a lesbian hero, though--; she's too damaged for that. She's evil and manipulative. She seduced an older married woman with a child...she's a sexual predator.Had it been a man writing this, there'd have bee an outcry from intelligent women and men that it was a sexist novel and therefore not worth the reader's time.Molly's not the lesbian hero she needs to be. Someone less sexist, less damaged. Someone with a bigger heart is needed for the role of hero. Someone who doesn't belittle others to raise up her own status. Some of the early chapters are well done, though even there we see just how unethical Molly is.
