This book highlights a wide range of diverse topics within human social behavior, but often those topics are only loosely related, if at all, and none is covered in much depth. Thus, this book really is an introduction to a wide field, and helps the reader explore a range of subjects that exist.In the Epilogue (page 144), the author writes: "In this book, I have tried to... provide a sketch-- much like an architect's first drawing-- of the main struts of human behavior." That statement much better summarizes and describes this book than does what it says on the cover: "Read People: Understand behavior. Expertly communicate."This book is very nicely written, organized into subsections, and presented; however, if you choose to spend time reading it, realize that it will provide a scattering of diverse topics, without much depth on any one.Read this book if you want a general introduction to and overview of human social mechanisms; I would give this book 4 or 5 stars as an introductory overview, as it certainly contains many interesting thoughts; but choose a different book if you're looking for an instructional guide to any particular skills (I’d have to give it only 1 or 2 stars as an instructional).

I found Read People to be interesting and well-presented. The book is based on Behavioral Psychology, giving cues on how to understand the behavior of others which then enables you to communicate with them in a more productive manner. It's value is proportional to how much background you already have in the subject matter.I really liked the way the information was presented. The book is made up of 5 sections with 20 lessons overall. The sections/lessons can be read sequentially, or in any manner you choose. Each section presents the material in the following way:> Build - gives an introduction to the important concepts of the lessons in the section> Become - explains how to apply the lessons> Toolkits - help you keep track of what you've learned so far> Further Learning - lists additional resources if you would like to read furtherThis book can be helpful to anyone who likes to understand others and would be a helpful addition to one's business library.Many thanks to Netgalley and Aurum Press for allowing me to read the book in exchange for an unbiased review. Pro: There is not as much fluff as other books. Read People gives you a streamlined version of what you need to know in brief sections that are easy to read and follow. This would be an acceptable first book as an introduction to nonverbal cues and body language or a quick reference guide of basic concepts.Con: After reading other, more detailed books, by authors like Paul Ekman, I was underwhelmed. It felt like a good quick review of things I've learned before. The illustrations are very simple, which may be good for teaching a young child to understand the principles, but they did not show enough detail for real-life application.

A very basic and somewhat simplistic guide to "reading people". Things that I believe most people are already aware of. Many other authors have covered the subject much better (for example, Joe Navarro's books). I'm just underwhelmed by this book.

Informative and practical with exercises to help solidify the concepts in the book. I highly recommend this book.
