Bombs, Bullets, and Bribes: the true story of notorious Jewish mobster Alex Shondor Birns by Rick Porrello Review

Having grown up during the height of Shondor Birns era and being somewhat familiar with the bombings, etc., I was nevertheless impressed by the detailed research that went into the book. I read the story over one night and the next morning, unable to put it down. Birns' character emerges quickly and substantially evolves deeper and deeper into psychological fury that fuels his passion to be 'somebody' and an unforgettable success. It follows a very logical, readable progression, well-paced, and while all the characters are not fully developed as Birns, for obvious reasons, one gets a sense of the fear and drama Birns and associates faced daily. One can even feel a bit sorry for Birns' suffering at the relentless arrest campaign and harassment by police, FBI and the IRS. Along the way names came up of people I know whose lives were in someway connected to Birns. Amazing.

This novel brought back many memories. I knew some of the characters personally. I even gave Ron Bey a ride in my car in the 70s. I knew Mr. Seawright because I did some appraisal work for him. He and my father were acquaintances. I met Mr. Drake in Riley's poolroom. Also knew Attorney Willis. The story was well told and well documented.

Alex Shondor Burns was a Cleveland, Ohio mob figure who was a bigger than life character. Shondor Burns saw his name in the newspaper on a regular basis. Rick Porello, author of a book about the Cleveland Mafia, has done a thorough job telling Burns story. Cleveland Ohio at the time Burns was alive was labelled as Bomb City. One of the city's leading bombers was Shondor Burns.An excellent read.Highly recommended.

Unlike some of the mob books I've read where so many names and details muddy up the story, this book is written in a way that is simple to follow and gets right to the point of each event without boring you with endless details just to fill the pages.I like the fact that the author revealed what I always suspected...that Don King was involved in the numbers rackets. I always knew King was a piece of trash; this book just confirmed it (just like Al Sharpton, who was also involved with the mob, as I read in another book).Now I'm reading "To Kill the Irishman" about Danny Greene (who is mentioned a lot near the end of this book).

I grew up in Cleveland when it was called Bomb Town USA. I remember a lot as I had a Cleveland Press route and my best friend had a Cleveland Plain Dealer route. We saw all the headlines. This book documents everything. I loved learning the back stories. I think Christopher Walken should reprise his role as he did in Kill The Irishman. I remember a lot about that part of the story too. Fantastic writing once again!
