Even after one stolen kiss, something has to give before Leo can convince Jason that falling in love is even an option. Adopted at a young age, Leo is part of the sprawling Byrnes family. With his dog Cap, three siblings and a whole mess of nieces and nephews, he is never lonely, and his life is full. Love is the last item on his to-do list, but seeing his best friends Sean and Eric happy and making new families makes him want things he doesn’t think is possible. Kissing Jason at an event to honor his bravery was one thing, but anything other than that is off limits. Until Jason has no one left to turn to, and it’s Leo who helps him at his lowest. Taking Jason and his daughter into his home is one thing, but falling for the ex-con is something else altogether. Jason made a deal to keep his daughter safe and spent years behind bars as a result. Volunteering as a convict firefighter was as much about helping the community as saving his sanity, but now that he’s out, he doesn’t even have that. He’s lost his future, his self-respect, and has no friends or a place to call home. Worst of all, even after rescuing his daughter he still can’t keep her safe from the man who wants to use her as a bargaining chip for money. Meeting Leo might give Jason a way to keep Daisy safe, but falling for the stubborn cop means the truth has to be revealed, and he could lose everything all over again.
**********Contains Spoilers**********Man, this was probably my favourite book of the series so far. I loved the connection between Leo and Jason when they finally got rid of everything between them like Jason’s misunderstanding that Leo made a mistake in kissing Jason because Jason was an ex-con and Leo was a Cop but it was that he regretted doing it then in the bathroom of the fire station where Jason got an award for saving Eric, Jason not trusting Leo because he was a cop and the Feds that were meant to keep Rain and Daisy his daughter safe didn’t do a very good job but him and Daisy need somewhere safe to stay until they can move on and Leo scaring Daisy when he heard her tell Sean that Daddy-B hurt mommy and all Leo heard was Daddy then saw red and shoved Jason into a wall, it was because Leo’s dad hurt him badly when he was Daisy’s age and he didn’t want anyone to hurt her.Jason knew that the only reason Leo lost his sh*t with him was because he thought he’d been the one hurting Daisy and was trying to protect her, which made Jason’s decision to stay with Leo a good one as he knew that he’d protect Daisy, even if he still struggled with Leo being a Cop for awhile, due to everything the Feds promised but didn’t deliver. I loved how much Cap helped Daisy and was protective of her. I loved how much Leo cared for and spoilt both Mia and Daisy and it was cool to see Jason slowly drop his defensive shell and slowly be less protective of Daisy and you can see how much he starts to trust Leo as he doesn’t panic when he wakes up and she isn’t next to him. I like how Leo and Jason’s relationship slowly grows into something meaningful. It’s cool how Leo’s family kind of adopts Jason and Daisy from basically first hearing about him again and meeting him again and Daisey for the first time when Leo brings them to his parents for Thanksgiving. I loved how much Daisy ended up trusting Leo and loving him as she was happy to hug him, talk to him when she was upset. I’m looking forward to reading Adam’s story next as after getting a career ending injury saving a little boy who was trapped in a car he deserves some love. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to everyone.
The plot was interesting - a single dad with a past, running from a bad guy who wants to steal his child and use her for leverage to get money. BUT, the execution of the plot was messy. The two main characters exhibit an enormous amount of passive-aggressive behavior which was aggravating to read. Neither character came across as particularly interesting or engaging. In addition, poor sentence structure, bad grammar, incorrectly placed words and repetition of details indicated that a proofreader and an editor were badly needed for this story. There were a few surprising moments in the story that made it less predictable, but overall I found this book to be an example of an undisciplined writing style.
The books in this series just keep getting better with each new one. I loved being able learn so much about Jason. He and Leo were perfect for each other. And when you throw in a sweet little girl a and a black lab it makes this the perfect book to read. I can't wait for the next book on this series.
Other books in this series had my attention, too, but Promise built to the end… The story of Jason and Daisy is a slow release, but it seemed to make sense it would come out slowly, as their trust in. Leo formed and grew. Like the rest of the series, I yearned to return to the book more with each chapter.
I actually had my doubts about this series. However I have discovered that I have usually enjoyed almost all of this author's works so I went for it. I really enjoy this book and would recommend it along with the rest of the series for a very enjoyable read.
