Read Online and Download A Demon Inside by Rick R. Reed. Hunter Beaumont doesn't understand his grandmother's deathbed wish: "Destroy Beaumont House." He'd never even heard of the place. But after his grandmother passes and his first love betrays him, the family house in the Wisconsin woods looks like a tempting refuge. Going against his grandmother's wishes, Hunter flees to Beaumont House. But will the house be the sanctuary he had hoped for? Soon after moving in, Hunter realizes he may not be alone. And who -- or what -- he shares the house may plunge him into a nightmare from which he may never escape.Sparks fly when he meets his handsome neighbor, a caretaker for the estate next door, but is the man salvation...or is he the source of Hunter's terror?
What can one say about a thriller that is undeniably creepy, suspenseful and well written, but features a main character who is often aggravating past the point of comprehension? This scary haunted house story centers on the Beaumont family, who run afoul of a gypsy witch in the 1800s by running her off a tract of land and building their mansion there, resulting in a curse on any Beaumont who tries to live there. Flash forward to present day where naive sheltered Hunter Beaumont attends the death bed of his cherished grandmother, who rouses herself enough to demand that he destroy Beaumont House, a piece of family property previously unknown to him. Reeling from grief, virginal Hunter becomes easy prey for the machinations of his grandmother's sexy con artist doctor, who absconds with a chunk of his inheritance. After a violent incident on the Chicago El, Hunter decides to ignore his grandmother's wishes and lick his wounds in the Wisconsin wilderness at the isolated Beaumont mansion, which seems to have maintained itself miraculously in pristine condition despite being abandoned and neglected for years.Lots of creepy doings ensue, starting small and ratcheting up to far more dangerous. The house has a history of bad accidents and suicides - including the grisly deaths of Hunter's parents. Hunter spends a good deal of time wondering if his mind is playing tricks on him. His closest neighbors are an elderly recluse and the hunky handyman/dogsbody Michael that lives on that property. Conveniently, Michael is also gay and would love to start a relationship with Hunter, but Hunter cannot make up his mind whether Michael is behind the events at Beaumont House or merely an innocent bystander. The novel definitely has its creepy moments and is never boring. It is also a quick read, which is an added bonus. Reed develops Hunter well, so we understand at least initially why he responds to people and events the way he does after so many gut punches of grief and betrayal. However, there comes a point where Hunter's abrasiveness and stubborn streak is too much. We understand that Hunter has sunk most of his money in the house and loathes to be driven out, but when knives start being hurled at your head and you still hang around, it seems more stupid and brave. Similarly, his interactions with people seem to hit the same notes. Well-meaning people show up to provide needed information or offer help, Hunter gets standoffish, they advise him to leave before tragedy strikes and he does the opposite. Rinse, repeat. One character shows up early on with journals that should put Hunter off from moving into the house, but he is initially so rude to them that they end up just leaving without showing him the journals. His interactions with Michael become more puzzling in that we do not understand why Michael keeps putting up with the abuse. Michael obviously wants to help and be a romantic interest, but Hunter is chronically rude and spurns him repeatedly. Most people would consider this guy a pill and move on, but for some reason he keeps coming back around for more abuse. Michael's reactions in the finale seem a bit over-the-top since Hunter has spent the entirety of the novel pondering whether they could be friends and snarling at Michael, or just being incredibly uncivil to him for no good reason - so the depth of concern Michael seems to have for this guy is a bit unbelievable.A decent read for haunted house/ghost story fans, but the prickly main character definitely takes some getting used to. I would read another of Reed's novels, but I hope his main characters are not always this abrasive.
First off, the fact that most of this story is set in Wisconsin was a real upside for me. As a Wisconsinite, it's always a thrill to read stories set in my state, it's not one often used and on top of that, one of my college advisors has written many books about haunted Wisconsin, we even have one here in my hometown. Now, back to A Demon Inside, this is the first book by Rick R Reed that I have read and well, let's just say it won't be the last. To say Hunter Beaumont's life will never be the same when he doesn't follow his grandmother's dying wish to destroy Beaumont House is an understatement. A Demon Inside is creepy, weird, and just plain scary but there's also a little romance which may seem out of place in such a dark story but truthfully, it only heightens the freak out factor. Along with the Wisconsin connection, I'm a bit of an introvert myself so I felt for Hunter immediately and understood so much of what his inner monologue was saying. A great addition to my Halloween/paranormal shelf.
What a page turner, I loved this book!! I don't understand why some people complain about the main character, Hunter. I can completely understand his lack of trust and his suspicions of others. The guy witnessed his parents being brutally mangled to death when he was a child. He was raised and completely sheltered by his Grandmother. She was all he had in the world and after she died, he was lost. And after her death, the first person he'd ever trusted betrayed him so horribly. And lets not forget what happened at the end of the train ride. So is it really any wonder why the guy has trust issues and is so guarded? Personally, I found Hunter to be very brave considering he was in the house all alone. I loved that he was stubborn, strong willed, and independent. He didn't have the poor, pity me mentality. He was a fighter. This is the first Rick Reed book I've ever read and I loved it from the first page. He's so good at description, without over doing it. I can't stand over-done descriptions. I could so clearly picture each setting. I could feel the emotion of every character, especially Hunter. Well done Mr. Reed! Can't wait to read more of your work!
This book is adequate reading to kill time if bored. No pretentions to grand literature here. There are moments that raise interests in the characters, but the moment passes and in the end you cease caring. The plot is simple & predictable. More development could have been made of the promise made to the grandmother to destroy the house. The moment of actual promise was so brief as to be meaningless, a crucial mistake as much of the following trauma revolved around that promise. That was a missed opportunity. Another problem is the lack of sympathy the main character, Hunter Beaumont, elicits from the reader. Hunter never seems to learn from his mistakes and never undergoes any penance. Time & time again others will help him only to have him bite the hand that helps. I have known lots of people like that in my life and they were not individuald I would root for; they were the type I gloated whenever they got what they deserved. Unfortunately, the author wrote this novel intending the reader to root for an unsympathetic character. However, not all is wrong with the book. The parts concerning flashbacks to the 19th century and the witch's curse are very well done. So is the part about the old lawyer finding info about it and being kept from revealing it 1st by the snyde attitude of Hunter & finally by untimely death brought about by an accident (witchly derived?). Alas, this was also a lost opportunity as something more could have been made of Hunter finding about this though other means than a call from the attorney's secretary. The book is not a total loss. It is a quick read if nothing else is around & it has several good moments. Just don't expect a grand horror novel. It is just something to keep the mind occupied when boredom sets.
