Forget everything you have heard about Columbine and go into this book with a completely open mind. If not, your biases will muddy the content and you'll miss the entire point of the book.I thoroughly enjoyed this read. As someone who has survived mass tragedy very close to this one, and as a professional in the field of mental health, I felt that the author did a great job of presenting facts from all angles. Multiple times she states that she is not a professional and that the opinions are her own. She makes a valid point that all information must be considered in any diagnosis, not just the cherry picked information that fits a specific narrative.I can understand people being upset because it shakes up what is considered undeniable truth and gives a different perspective. People don't like change or for their ideas to be challenged.I also wanted to commend the author for all of the citations. This shows her ample amount of research and gives readers the exact location to go in order to see the evidence for themselves.

I recently finished Evidence Ignored, What You May Not Know About Columbine. It is clear that the author, Rita Gleason, has invested great time and effort researching and indexing thousands of pages of police reports, witness statements, as well as, investigator's notes. This book clearly outlines how missed and ignored events and behaviors in the personal lives of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold led to the Columbine tragedy. This book does contain one chapter in which the author CLEARLY states that she is not a psychiatric professional and is merely offering her opinion about the mental state of the perpetrators at the time of the attack. Previous reviewers have left comments regarding this chapter that lead me to believe that they have not read the book. I ENCOURAGE them to do so. I highly recommend Evidence Ignored to anyone interested in a more in depth look into the Columbine tragedy, the subsequent investigations, and new evidence that doesn't necessarily fit the narrative that many of us were led to believe.

Over 20 years ago, high school seniors Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold committed what was then the worst school shooting in American history, weeks away from their graduation. Twelve students and one teacher died, over twenty others were wounded – some suffering permanent physical damage. In the first hours and days after, media coverage was rife with what we later learned was misinformation: the pair were members of a supposedly sinister group called the Trench Coat Mafia, that they targeted specific people, that the shooting was motivated solely by a desire to exact revenge for bullying. The rapid spread of rumor-as-fact was no doubt exacerbated by the then-relatively new 24-hour news cycle. News crews descended on the school almost as soon as the police to interview fleeing students, record the actions of emergency services, and speculate endlessly about what was happening and why. More than twenty years on, we still don’t truly know. Harris and Klebold took whatever answer they could have given—if they could provide a concrete one at all—with them when they killed themselves in the school’s library.We may never know with any certainty why Columbine happened, but we can sift through available evidence—police and FBI reports—and what we do know from Harris and Klebold’s writings to try to understand. Rita Gleason does exactly this with her exhaustively referenced, thoroughly researched book. Because Gleason pays such attention to documenting her sources for things like witness statements from students who were in the library during the shooting, it’s easy to check her notes, find the exact pages the information appears on in official documents, and compare and contrast accounts of what the pair did and said during the shooting. Her attention to detail here makes her book invaluable for researchers. Her efforts also work to correcting misconceptions about the shooting that have been pervasive despite evidence undermining them. We’ve known for a long time that people were shot and killed indiscriminately, yet the myth that only jocks were targeted remains one of the most persistent.Gleason’s book also aims to correct misconceptions about Eric and Dylan as people. Popular opinion has long held that Harris acted as the psychopathic leader, with Klebold the depressive follower. While Gleason is careful to note that she isn’t a psychiatrist, and that post-mortem diagnostics are nearly impossible anyway, she does explore this ubiquitous concept. What she comes away with is that both expressed a desire to kill, both a desire to die, and both engaged in antisocial behaviors leading up to the shooting. There is not, however, a cut-and-dry diagnostic framework to fit either into. It would be simple, as Gleason herself points out, if we could place Harris in one box and Klebold in another. If, though, we want to understand what happened here—with an eye to preventing future shootings—then this simplified division won’t provide the full picture we need.The idea that the pair were, as early headlines proclaimed, “the monsters next door” becomes troubled through this assessment. One of the most important pieces of the work she’s done here is to unsettle the notion that Eric and Dylan were clearly and fundamentally deranged, violent people. They, like many teenagers, struggled to figure out who they were, where they might belong, and how they could connect with others. A poignant example of this comes when she discussed Harris’s brief relationship with a female student, who wrote very fondly of his kindness to her in a memory book created by the school after the shooting. In her treatment of Klebold, she talks about what he saw as his problematic introversion and his resulting sense of isolation. He laments being too shy to form the deeper connections he seeks and fears he never will. It’s disturbing for how recognizable and comprehensible it is, and how familiar it renders the pair. How do we see signs of the violence they carried out and distinguish that from the trouble and angst many experience as teens?Providing as complete a picture as possible of Harris and Klebold through the knowledge we do have of them, left behind in writings and gathered from statements made by their families and friends, to understand and prevent future Columbines is ultimately Gleason’s aim. It is one she succeeds at admirably. Her book problematizes the idea that Harris and Klebold were outwardly disturbed, too, that their actions should have been easily apprehended by anyone paying the slightest attention. Warning signs surely existed, but more worrying is how difficult it was—and still is, to judge by how frequent mass shootings have become—to put the pieces together into a coherent whole when there was still time to prevent this tragedy.

You wouldn't trust a veterinarian to performe a heart surgery, do a legal evaluation or consult them for the construction of your garage, but Gleason offers her expertise on the mental states of Harris and Klebold.I like to emphasize that I read books from the browns to Krass over Larkin about the case. I researched it for several years.That book is particularly dangerous when it comes to hand picked information. The author doesn't offer any valuble to findings, but puts together a collection of already published information with her on gut feeling hypothesis.The book is a whole defense story of Eric Harris. Starting with that bullying drove this poor individual to stood finally up for himself, over a Loveletter to him to her disputing his diagnosis of psychopathy. Hereby, every tiny glimpse is used in defense of Harris and contradictory information gets pushed under the rug. For example Gleason prints that Eric only wanted retaliation for being picked on. She ignores conviently that he demanded to push an indivial in the face. That is particularly dangerous because it gives a false impression of the situation and let people believe that is the full story. Evidence ignored is the right title. Gleason pretty much ignores every single writing of Harris where he states "I am the law", " I want to see the world burn", or where he marveled about raping girls. Those things don't exist.Against all researchers who put an eye on the case she cites only evidence convient to her and that fit her conclusion.Beware of that book. It views a mass murder through rose colored glasses.
