Super Sons: The Foxglove Mission by Ridley Pearson Review

One of the number one rule in comic book art.....”art is in support of the story.” The colorist has gone out of their way to muddy up this storyline. Halfway through this book I couldn’t tell if it was night or day or what city I was in. Every panel has a different colors or swirls or slashes with absolutely no reason for them. I noticed in the first book all the colors had the same vibrance with no differentiation between the colors in the background with the protagonist in the foreground. Towards the end they’re on a boat with a brightly blue colored sky, and on the same page, the close-ups were everywhere: dark red backdrops, orange ones with swirls or blue with yellow stripes. Seems like the book could get published in half the time without all those messy backdrops.Maybe these crazy colors are to signify some type of mood swings, pushed on to the writer by a bossy artist. Some of Candaces visions were done in a mono-color style, but not all her visions. Seems like inconsistency in style.It didn’t help that i read this book immediately after reading, Dear justice League, a super funny book about kids emailing superheroes. Excellent drawings with very light colored easy to read panels that illustrated some very hilarious stories.

I continue to be confused by this series. The story has some promise, but why borrow elements from the DCU when you’re not going to be faithful to their history? This is a very bad version of an elseworld.I’m also not to keen on the exposition here. The book jumps you straight into the action with little recapping. It’s been a while since book one, and I don’t have enough of it in my memory to catch up. The story also seems rushed. There’s a lot packed into 151 pages and little time to breathe between events.

First things first, it’s pretty obvious that the author has never even touched a comic book on any of these Dc characters. Their backstories are totally off, as well as their personalities. To be honest it feels more like the author had an idea for a original story but someone paid them to write a “SuperSons” story, so they just smooshed it together. It’s fine for kids maybe in elementary, but it’s kinda hard to follow.To finalize my point, if you’re a DC fan or even just a fan of the comics Supersons, Batman, or Superman, this was NOT made for you. But if you’re just a parent finding something for your kid, it’s fine. A little hard to follow but I’m sure little kids would still like it.Ps: for some really odd reason Damian wants to go by Ian in this book. It’s never explained why. I just found that odd.

I have not even read this book yet as we received it this evening and it is for my 9 year old. She has already finished the book. This book must be awesome because I didn’t even know that she could read that fast!😋 Thank you to the author who has participated in my child’s love for reading.
