Read Online and Download Kid Coach by Rob Justus. Kid Coach takes couch potatoes and turns them into champions. And no one is a bigger couch potato than Dad. It will take all of Kid Coach’s expertise to get Dad off the couch at all let alone in fighting form for the local Wrestle-Rumble-Mania-Kingdom Tournament of Champions. Dad will have to go up against big guys, bald guys, bad guys, and even… big bald bad guys! But soon Kid Coach learns that while training a champion may be tough, teaching Dad to be a good sport might be even tougher. Can Kid Coach get Dad to tap out before he becomes big, bald, bad guy toast?
In a twist on the typical father-son story, Kid Coach teaches his protege -- Dad -- a thing or two. When Dad, a couch potato- turned wrestling champ, starts winning in the ring (thanks to his son), he learns what it means to be a true champion: being a good sport and making new friends. This is a book with a valuable lesson for kids in what often seems like a winner-take-all world. And who doesn't love a book about wrestling, especially accompanied by Rob Justus's hilarious illustrations?
It art and illustrations in this book are amazing and wonderful! So cute, sometimes truly hilarious. My kids got a kick out of the pictures the most.Though they did connect with the sportsmanship theme as well. They know that being a poor winner is as bad as being a sore loser. But this was a fun way to reiterate that lesson. This would have received 5 stars easily if the end hadn't included a "bribe" to make amends. While it made sense to my kids, I've only ever made them give up a favorite toy when they've done something truly bad like stealing. Probably why they've only ever had that particular lesson once.Though I do understand that sometimes even a sincere apology is definitely not enough for making someone feel bad, I wished the author had come up with an alternative.Still it's a really wonderful book, and despite my small misgiving it's a really good message.
Kid Coach by Rob Justus is a humorous take on learning good sportsmanship within the colorful world of pro-wrestling. In this fun father-son story, Kid Coach trains his dad to compete in the Wrestle-Rumble Mania Kingdom Tournament of Champions. (I LOLed at that name.) The larger-than-life characters are a lot of fun and very true to the colorful setting - there are "big guys, bad guys, bald guys, and a scary guy with tattoos of big, bad, and bald guys." The story problem compounds as Dad becomes a little too full of himself, making the other guys "sad" and "mad." I liked how the emotions felt authentic and the resolution showed Dad realizing the hurt he had caused and making several attempts to apologize and make up for his behavior.
As someone who works with children for a living, I believe “Kid Coach†inspires conversations about “winning†that is much needed in the classroom. In the story, the son coaches his couch potato father into a wrestling champion...until Dad is so prideful and gloating about being #1 that he loses respect from the other wrestlers. Kid Coach has to teach Dad that he can’t be a winner if he fails to inspire and uplift others. Many children are learning how to not only be awesome at something through hard work, but how to handle “winning†and understanding the power of humility and restoring relationships sincerely. This is a great book to begin contemplating such topics with children. Justus illustrated this dynamic book with equally exciting illustrations and whimsical character design. Recommended especially for children who are in competitive fields.
While KID COACH lifts more than its weight in humor, heart, and a wonderful father-son bond through sports, what impressed me most is how the book’s arc delivers a solid in for understanding and celebrating a larger idea of sportsmanship and the growth of character that often comes from participating in a sport under the guidance of a great coach. Also, the book does all this without being heavy-handed—even with literal heavy hands in the hilarious illustrations. It wrestles with the joys of being a tough-guy—not denying the fun or pride that can come from being the toughest, while also celebrating where true toughness comes from. Any kids who love wrestling, pretend fighting, or tough-guy play will especially love this book, and their caregivers will love that the book elevates all those parts of play to a higher purpose. Plus and maybe more than all of the above, I laughed aloud reading it—right at the top of the emotional arc where a person might feel too many feelings—perfect relief and comedic timing. Well done Rob Justus!
