Understand Your Style and the Style of Others When you hear the word style, you usually think of fashion. But there is much more to style than the clothes we wear. I really enjoyed working through this book of self assessments on issues such as spirituality, finances, leadership and parenting style. I think 99% of readers can learn something about themselves. I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars for a couple of reasons: 1. The author's values come through too heavily to make this of use to just anyone. If you're a person of Christian faith, which I am, it will resonate with you. But if you're not, which most aren't, it would be nice to have a heads up to know the orientation. Even as a Christian, at times, I felt like McDaniel's theology was showing through too much, as well as his own social style. For example, he seemed to have a bias against homeschooling, lumping these parents in the Attachment parenting style. In other style descriptions, there at times seemed to be value judgements - this one is good, this one not so good. 2. Although he explains on whose research and assessment the questions are based, I found myself wondering how closely these style assessments match the original assessments. If they were heavily edited, they would be less accurate. Something like linking back to the original assessments or more info on them would work, or just a statement about how closely to the original his assessment is would be nice for full disclosure. Finally, I think the order should be reversed - assessment first, then explanation of the types because as is, you get an idea in your head of which type you want to be and that can't help but influence the way you answer the questions.I do think this book would be fun to work through with your fiancé, spouse, partner. Could be a great jumping off point for better understanding each other.
When I received a complimentary copy of You Got Style for review, I thought I was going to read a book that helped me better analyze my own styles and tendencies. (Which it did.) What I didn’t see coming was how useful this book would be for counseling others, for understanding group dynamics, and for even understanding my own kids! This isn’t just a book about you, it’s really about understanding everyone who is walking around you, and helping you relate to them. Its a fun read, and easy to follow.I would recommend this book: to couples who are getting to know each other (or trying to understand each other), to teams who are trying to work more cohesively, and to parents who are trying to make sense of their kids (that's all of us, right?).
I received a complimentary copy of this book, however, I liked it so much that I bought a hardcover when it became available on Amazon & I plan to buy on Audible as soon as it is available. I want to get a copy for my husband so we can share our Style Inventory results. This book would also be awesome for a Book Club.I loved learning more about each of the styles, it has already helped me to better understand my co-workers, my husband and my friends. I liked the style inventories for each topic so I could learn more about myself. I think this would also make a good graduation or even wedding gift. This book is like the 5 Love Languages meets The Purpose Driven Life! It is definitely worth your time to check it out.
This book lays out and describes style (personality) types to understand oneself and appreciate others. Inventories at the end of each chapter provide insight to correlate with the reading. Best chapter is the last: Jesus Style. In a world increasingly focused on Diversity and Inclusion, this book can be a companion in the conversation.
You’ve Got Style is an interesting and enlightening read in an easy to understand presentation. This book covered everything from financial styles to learning styles to decision styles. It gives perspective on understanding yourself and others that we encounter in our daily lives. Understanding your own style in the context of other people’s styles can help with relationships, work etc. I appreciated that the author included examples of various public figures and discussed their personal styles which is a fun way to identify with and understand the different styles. Some of the inventory questionnaires are longer than others. I chose to read straight through and come back to some of them. I am eager to complete all of the style inventories and will definitely have my wife do them as well! I received a complimentary copy for review.
