Read Online and Download When Antidepressants Aren’t Enough: Harnessing the Power of Mindfulness to Alleviate Depression by Stuart J. Eisendrath MD,Zindel Segal PhD. For nearly two decades, Dr. Stuart Eisendrath has been researching and teaching the therapeutic effects of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) with people experiencing clinical depression. By helping them recognize that they can find relief by changing how they relate to their thoughts, Eisendrath has seen dramatic improvements in people’s quality of life, as well as actual, measurable brain changes. Easily practiced breath exercises, meditations, and innovative visualizations release readers from what can often feel like the tyranny of their thoughts. Freedom of thought, feeling, and action is the life-altering result.
Depression is difficult. So is Anxiety. I've tried a lot of different things over the years, and mindfullness has been one thing to really move the needle when it comes to changing my mood and my life. This book has a lot of great analogies that are easy to remember, so when you do find yourself in a tough situation, you can remember the leaves floating down the river, of the empty boat knocking in the night. It takes a weight off your shoulders, and i'm grateful to have found it. The description of the exercises in this book are easy to follow, and can be done anywhere, which is super convenient. You can do them on the bus, in the car, walking, eating, or even in bed. These are tools you can take with you everywhere, and they definitely helped me. I definitely recommend this book!
This book changed my life. I've tried antidepressants for my depression and had limited success which is exactly the type of response this book is aimed at. It has well laid out meditations that are available to download or stream and these are very helpful They are relatively brief--you aren't spending 45 minutes sitting and trying to concentrate. The book also described the clinical and brain studies this approach is based on. Helps to know you can actually change how your brain functions!
My therapist has recommended it to me. I was hesitant. I had read lots of those "self help" books and I would forget the teachings in a few days. This time it is different. I am not sure if it is that I am willing to try harder or that it is pretty straight forward and the message is reinforced many times, in different ways... maybe it is the combination of the two but this book felt revelatory to me. It has become my new personal " bible". I keep rereading it before I go to sleep and at this point I might have read it 7 or 8 times... because every time something new sticks out... and I also want the message and the exercises to stay with me for ever. I am really impressed by this short book that offers so encouragement and so much practical help.
Dr. Eisendrath combines two powerful healing processes, Mindfulness and Cognitive Therapy, and takes them to a whole new level. This books helps us befriend our minds by developing a new relationship with our thoughts. We can have much more choice over our thoughts, beliefs, and surprisingly over our emotions. We learn to mindfully decenter from our thoughts and take them much less seriously, seeing them as mental events rather than cold, hard facts. Many experiential activities are provided to practice these skills in order to make them a part of our lives. This offers us some real relief from the oppressive thoughts that often underly depression. Thank you, Dr. Eisendrath!
i've dealt with depression most of my life. it's not fun. after doing some research online, i found and ordered this book right away. i felt like the author, dr eisendrath, was speaking directly to me. i understood it, i followed it and i implemented his teachings, including that thoughts are not your friends. it's a really well written book and it's my top read of the year. i'm so lucky to have found this wonderful book.
