Read Online and Download Paper Cuts: My Life in Chicago's Volatile LGBTQ Press by Rick Karlin. Paper Cuts: My Life in Chicago’s Volatile LGBTQ Press is the story of Rick Karlin’s life writing for Chicago’s newspapers, balancing that with his family life outside of it. Joining the staff at GayLife in 1978 gave Karlin a front-row seat at some of the momentous events in post-Stonewall LGBTQ history. From the privileged vantage point of a newspaper office, he watched the rise and fall of disco, the AIDS crisis, same-sex marriage, bars opening and closing, and LGBTQ newspapers coming and going. Like gossip columnists, Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons, Karlin knew the dirt going on behind the scenes. … Scratch the veneer of what Karlin calls his “so-called celebrity†and you will find a man of conviction, morals, and a keen sense of community. In short, Rick Karlin is a jewel in the crown of Chicago’s LGBTQ press. In 1978 he dived into a polluted pool and, holding his nose, swam in it for decades. And Chicago is all the better for it.
I live in the same area that Rick Karlin currently lives, and was fortunate to meet him socially. I also attended his recent book promotional affair. I enjoyed his revealing and often humorous story of the LGBTQ press during the '70s and '80s. The story of his personal struggles in coming out is identifiable and emotionally moving. Compound that with being a Gay parent makes his memoir relevant. For us 'Gay Baby Boomers' that came out in this era, it is a great walk down memory lane. Karlin and his contribution to the Chicago LGBTQ community is a highly recommended read.
Rick Karlin's Paper Cuts: My Life in Chicago's Volatile LGBTQ Press is a must-read chronicle of LGBTQ life in Chicago from the1970s to the present. A gay man, a public school teacher, a gay father, and a gay activist and a writer and playwright, Karlin uses his incisive journalism skills, keen powers of observation, and tons of humor to tell the story of Chicago's LGBTQ community over five decades. From his decade's-long insider perch as the Pearl Mesta of Chicago's gay press (and the community's gossip columnist extraordinaire), Karlin delivers a valuable history of the important events and the major and minor movers and shakers that carried Chicago's LGBTQ community from political powerlessness in the 1970s to its current seat at the head table of Chicago's political, business, and cultural worlds. Like a gay Mike Royko, Karlin metes out merited praise and deserved criticism to the players that worked, competed, and often fought bitterly inside Chicago's diverse, fractured, but ultimately potent LGBTQ press. Karlin helped make Chicago's gay press better, and made Chicago a better city during the past 50 years.
The book is not at all what I expected. It's extremely boring and offers nothing new that hasn't appeared in print several times already. Rick karlin is a fading footnote in the history of LGBTQ+ Chicago print media. His relevance is questionable. His insight is boring. This is the man that asked sales people arrange so that he "eat and drink for free" in order for him to write a restaurant review. This is the way he conducted himself at Chicago Free Press. There is an opportunity for a really interesting and intriguing book to be written about gay media in Chicago...Apparently Rick Karlin wasn't that person. I do not recommend this book.
A fun, entertaining, funny, often sad, intimate, wild ride into the LGBTQjournalistic world of Chicago basically from the time of it's inception in the70s thru the 80s till now to becoming a big part of Chicago's mainstream media.Told from the perspective of a truly remarkable, creative, talented columnist, writer, teacherand admirable family man.........A MUST READ!
I instantly connected with Rick’s book. While I didn’t write for the “Gay Rags†I did read them religiously. His recollections reminded of a world before the internet! Thanks for writing this book.
