This is an outline designed to help you run a community discussion around creating a sense of belonging for your chapter members.
This outline was developed by Jessie Jacob using Culture Amp's signature Belonging Badges. Click here to view the Google Drive Folder with an explainer of what Belonging Badges are and the Bingo Card. You're welcome to print these out for in-person events. This could be facilitated online or in-person and takes around an hour.
Title - "Belonging Badge Bingo: Unveiling Identity and Embracing Belonging Workshop"
In this transformative workshop, we invite you to delve into the power of belonging and self-expression through the concept of "Belonging Badge Bingo." Join us as we explore the profound impact of vulnerability, acceptance, and inclusion on fostering meaningful relationships in both personal and professional realms.
Belonging badges serve as non-verbal expressions of our identity and experiences, enabling us to communicate who we are without uttering a word. Throughout this workshop, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your favorite badge, the badge you proudly wear, the badge you would invent, the badge that remains hidden from most, and the badge that represents your future self.
By engaging in these badge reflections, we will unlock a deeper understanding of ourselves and cultivate an environment of psychological safety, promoting genuine connections and meaningful conversations. Discover the badges that authentically represent you, and create space for others to share their own unique badges. Together, let's embrace belonging and build a community founded on acceptance and inclusivity.
To begin, allow a few minutes for people to show up, get acclimated. During this time, the leads will welcome participants as they arrive. It's important to acknowledge people as they arrive into the physical or virtual space.
Share who we are as a Culture First Community.
Repeat the 5 core principles of how we do things and what holds us all together.
Then share why we are gathering today. What's the purpose?
The Check-In and Introductions
Moving from the welcome, it is now time to allow people to intentionally connect and get to know one another a bit better.
Consider leading the group in grounding or breathing exercise. Options:
3 rounds of breath - 4 seconds in, 4 seconds out
Box breathing - breath in for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4, and then repeat
You could even play a video from Headspace or Calm
Then have them reflect on how they are doing right now in life. Questions to consider:
What's your energy level?
What's one word to describe how you're doing?
Ways to facilitate this:
Slido - have them share one word to describe each of these and create a word cloud
Climer Cards - have them pick cards to represent each of these answers
Piccles - have them use the app to doodle something on their phone or computer
Freeform Drawing - have them use a piece of paper to draw their answers
If you have a smaller group, consider having everyone share a one sentence reflection after each person shares their answer. If it's a larger group, break into small groups or just pick a couple to highlight.
Part 1 - Belonging Badge Bingo
Explain what Belonging Badges are. Below is an explainer. These are iconic and a signature of a Culture Amp gathering.
Then present them with the Bingo card. Give the group time to fill out their bingo cards.
Facilitation Notes:
Consider starting a timer. For zoom, click on apps in the bottom and there is a timer app which will allow you to show the timer in your image's window on zoom.
Consider playing some music. A popular kind of music for this is 'Lo-Fi Beats'
You could build a Miro board and have folks fill out cards to answer their bingo cards.
Part 2 - Group Share
Have the group share their belonging badges. Depending on how much time you want to spend on this and the amount of people, there a few ways to facilitate this.
For a short amount of time, have them go around one by one and share their badges with one another with no additional context.
For larger groups, break them up into smaller groups to share.
For a smaller group, have folks share all of theirs and give them a time to answer all of them providing additional context
For a smaller group, have them go one bingo square at a time for everyone then go to the next category.
For a smaller group, you may even allot the group a certain number of follow up questions they are allowed to ask to someone sharing.
Part 3 - Group Reflection
Have the group share their experience of that exercise.
Zoom poll idea - How connected did you feel beforehand? How connected do you feel now?
Group Share questions-
What did you all think of that?
What surprised you?
What did you learn about yourself?
Could you do this with your teams?
The action
Going to another workshop or event only moves the needle so much in improving the world of work. It's about the action. This is the time to get the group to reflect and see what they are inspired to do.
A question for reflection:
What's one thing you learned today that you're willing to put into action?
The close (5 mins)
Event great meeting has an intentional close. There are a few ways to close. Here are some suggestions:
In 1-2 sentences, what was your biggest takeaway from today?
Create a belonging badge to describe how you're feeling now?
Create space for the community to connect with one another. Consider inviting them to your slack channel. Consider having them share their LinkedIn profiles with one another. Have a discussion about what they would like to see next for the chapter's next meeting.
Wrap up by thanking everyone for attending and sharing your upcoming events and how they can stay involved.
