Dear Clifton Community,
I am thrilled to share some exciting news regarding the ongoing estates project here at Clifton. With the remarkable help of our estates committee under the incredible leadership of Dirk van den Berg, the aim of this project is to create a long-term estate plan which embodies our commitment to the preservation of childhood amidst our campus's natural beauty.
Aligned with our visionary 100-year plan, meticulously crafted by specialist Gary Cox, whose expertise has been instrumental in shaping the future of educational spaces, including Michaelhouse, we are embarking on a journey to ensure the enduring legacy of Clifton for generations to come.
At the heart of this plan is the preservation and enhancement of our campus, ensuring that every action we take today aligns seamlessly with the vision we have for Clifton a century from now. From the careful planting and removal of trees to the creation of spaces that celebrate the unique essence of Clifton, every decision is made with the utmost consideration for our children and community.
One remarkable aspect of our master plan is the reestablishment of habitats for endangered species like the Cape Parrot, achieved through the strategic planting of indigenous Yellowwood trees. Moreover, our vision encompasses creating a safe and enriching environment where children can immerse themselves in nature, whether through walks, bike rides, visiting the bee observation centre or simply enjoying the beauty of our surroundings. Amphitheaters, shaded picnic spots, fishing spots are all part of the creative dream.
This development started over the past 10 months with the clearing of the Bonga Bonga and thorny bushes in the valley at the bottom of our campus. This includes the completion of the electric fence, which ensures that this underutilised part of the school campus will now be completely safe for our children to access. The hope is that over the next few years our efforts will be transforming this area into a tranquil haven centered around the stream. Plans include the creation of bicycle tracks, walkways, and a diverse array of trees to enhance the natural beauty of this space.
Plans have been drawn up for a 4.2km mountain bike track, winding from top woods down into the valley. The hope is that this addition will provide students with exhilarating outdoor opportunities while immersing them in the stunning surroundings of Clifton.
In top woods, we are dreaming of introducing a Gruffalo walk—an enchanting adventure for children to enjoy the wonders of nature in a playful setting.
We certainly have acknowledged that our 65-hectare campus is not merely a setting for education; but it is a sanctuary where children can connect with the wonders of the natural world. Therefore, our ultimate goal remains unchanged: to create a haven where every child can flourish.
Over the next few weeks in the newsletter, we will keep you informed on some of the work taking place in this space.
It goes without saying that projects like these certainly are not possible without sufficient funding. Should you feel that you would like to contribute to the fast-tracking of this project, please do not hesitate to contact myself directly.
