Grade 0 Farm Outing - 5 June
A Champ bus full of excited ‘Chameleons’ left Clifton on Wednesday and headed towards the mountains en route to Excelsior Farm. Passing the beautiful Spring Grove dam and catching a glimpse of the snow on the Berg added to our adventure. On arrival, we were greeted by an excited Lucy and Jo who were waiting for us.
Simon Greene drove us to the neighbouring farm, Bramleigh. Kaitlyn Kauerauf taught the children about her free-range chickens. The highlight for the children was collecting hundreds of eggs from the nesting houses. Twenty children and only one broken egg, is quite impressive, don’t you think! We drove to the silage pits with many holding their noses from the bad smell. The milking shed, where 60 cows are milked twice a day was interesting, but climbing up the ladder to the top of the milk tank was a bit daunting for some.
The children met two newborn calves who were resting in the pens. For some, it was their first time touching a calf. The drive back to the house displayed beautiful views of the valley and farm dams. A picnic on the lawn at Lucy’s house was a favourite as lunchboxes were filled with yummy treats. The children explored the expansive farm garden, fed the koi fish and played until the Champ bus hooted for our return trip.
A huge thank you to Simon and Tammy Greene for hosting us. A truly special and memorable experience for all.
