Squash

It really feels as if we have been swept along in a whirlwind this semester. Every month from January until May, there has been a tournament, run by the KZN officials. These were the KZN trials to determine the players representing the province in the Interprovincial Tournament in June. (This is over and above the Stayers Tournament in September of the previous year which counts as the first KZN trial).

23 of our Clifton pupils took part in these trials- some more frequently than others- and 12 of them have been chosen to represent our province in the IPT held this week in the Cape. (The u11s in George and the u13s in Port Elizabeth /Qqeberha.)

Congratulations to our KZN reps:

U13B girls: ‘Mabatho Seeiso

U13A boys: James Witherspoon and Brett Roberts

U13B boys: William Watt-Pringle, Liam Muller and Cayden Flockart

U11A boys: Grant Muller, Benjamin Leitch, Litsitso Makara and Kian Moor

U11B boys Jack Warburton and Siphosethu Mthethwa

We are very proud of them all for their selection and the reports of their good sportsmanship which is always of paramount importance. They appear to have had a wonderfully enjoyable tour. We are particularly thrilled for James Witherspoon and Grant Muller who were both selected to play as number 1 seeds for KZN in their respective age groups.

We have included photos sent by our players during the tour. Grant Muller and Kian Moor were delighted to have met two of our Springbok rugby players, Duane Vermeulen and Jesse Kriel, at the Oliver Tambo airport on their way to catch their flight to George for the IPT.

On the 9 May Epworth held a squash Clinic at Clifton mainly for the grade 6 girls. The first 15 girls who entered were lucky enough to participate. Our past pupils, Tammy Galliers (previous Clifton captain) and Amy Gerber, accompanied the Epworth leader, Alan McGuigan. They organised drills and fun exercises for the girls to teach them skills. It was a tremendously successful afternoon and we are anticipating making it an annual event.

The courts at Clifton are as busy as ever in spite of the vast number of other sports and activities offered at Clifton. Term 3 affords us the opportunity of offering each individual grade a chance to participate in an internal closed tournament, where they are able to play against the other members of their age-group. It is entirely for fun! More details will be sent to the respective parent groups closer to the time.

A big thank you to Beth Cole-Pepper and Nicole Houart for their invaluable assistance with court supervision.

We look forward to the new term when, once again, the courts will be as busy as a beehive.
