Project Based Learning
This term’s Project–Based Learning Day was a culmination of the work done in STEAM classes, and put into practice the concepts covered over the course of the term.
Grade 6 made use of apps such as Canva to meet the brief of creating an original cereal box that is appealing to children. They also put their knowledge of volume and nets into practice in creating their prototypes from cardboard, working within a tight time frame. With products emerging with such names as ‘Reptile Enclosure’, ‘Bits & Bites’, and ‘Cobra Kai’, the audience (Grades 6 & 7) was very impressed with the presentations. Keep an eye on the shelves for their products in years to come.
Following a scenario similar to the ‘Dragon’s Den’ concept, Grade 7 were faced with the challenge of designing and pitching an advertisement for a 4-wheeled, robust, electrically-powered wheelchair capable of enabling differently-abled people to reach far-flung places on campus. Using Tinkercad, and in a formal presentation including creating a virtual model, together with the costings of each vehicle, it was clear that much planning, forethought, and innovation had gone into the process.
Grade 4 put their map skills to the test in a fun and exciting way! They participated in a radio direction finding search and rescue exercise, using maps to navigate and locate a pretend "victim." They also explored the traditions of Clifton, by marking traditions on their maps.
Grade 5 Designed a poster showcasing the different parts of a flower electronically. Then, they took things a step further by bringing their digital flowers to life! Creating 3D models, complete with labels for each flower part. They also sculpted a flower in virtual clay after the style of local ceramicist Astrid Dahl.
We were greatly impressed by all the children – their research, planning, divergent thinking, and teamwork evident ensured that the day was an enormous success.
