Titanic Day - 26 April

A maritime disaster from the 20th century set the stage for an exciting morning of experiments and a dress-up to go with the re-living of this period in time.

Our Gr 3’s have studied the famous ships sinking as part of our sea theme for the term. An experiment using ice and water in a tub enabled the children to literally have a first-hand experience of the temperature of the water that the passengers had to endure once the ship had gone down. By submerging both hands in this freezing tub for 1 minute – they were able to appreciate just how awful it must have been. The children enjoyed a high tea, icing cupcakes as first class passengers would experienced have while on board the Titanic.

First, second, and third-class passengers together with the captain and coal shovellers arrived at school to commemorate this sad event in maritime history. They all brought an item that they would have salvaged from this ship. The children thoroughly enjoyed the morning as we ended off with watching an edited version of the Titanic movie.
