Extended Absence Request Form

Attention Parents:

EXTENDED ABSENCES MUST BE EXCUSED IN ADVANCE

If you will be missing 4 or more consecutive days of school, this is considered an extended absence. In order for extended absences to be “excused” so that the missed assignments and tests can be made up, parents must complete the Extended Absence Request Form (EARF). This will be signed by each of your teachers and Mr. Moen and then parents will receive an Extended Absence Learning Plan (EALP) via email within 2-5 school days. This Extended Absence Learning Plan (EALP) will include specific assignment instructions and deadlines from each of your teachers.
Please read this document carefully.

Social Emotional Counseling,

Virtual Calm Room

We created this Virtual Calm Room to serve as a break and to help you find new ways to manage strong emotions and build resilience. These resources will hopefully allow you to reset back to a calm state of mind and body. We encourage you to make it a priority to care for yourself in healthy ways. There are a lot of options in the Virtual Calm Room and not all coping strategies will feel right, so we encourage you to explore some and find what works for YOU

Let's Talk about Handling Stress and Anxiety!

Good Monday morning! Let's address stress and anxiety. As students, you have faced a lot this year: you've had to adapt to Zoom classrooms, deal with separation from friends and distant family members, face a variety of impacts on families, experience a contentious election, and adapt to new norms that are difficult and uncomfortable. If you have been experiencing a more than normal level of stress, you are not alone. Let's talk about how to deal with that stress.

Remember to take a moment and just breathe. Take 3 deep, slow breaths, or you can follow this breathing bubble. Be sure to breathe in through your nose.

Remember things you are grateful for. Take a moment to reflect on the positive things in your life (big or small) and write down or verbalize 3 of them.

Remember to practice self-care. Go for a walk, play with your pet, take a hot bath, read your favorite book, paint or draw a picture, journal, listen to calming or uplifting music. What does self-care look like for you? Set aside some time for yourself today to do something that takes care of you.

Remember who you can talk to. Identify a trusted adult who you can talk to. Perhaps that is a parent, family member, teacher, or counselor.

We love you Caimans!

If you would like to set up an appointment to talk with the social emotional counselor, please fill out the Counseling Referral Form. In addition to phone and Zoom appointments, we are now able to have appointments on campus in the counseling office!

IMPORTANT- Current 11th Grade PSAT Update

If you are a current student in 11th-grade and wish to take the PSAT on the NEW TESTING DATE of TUESDAY, January 26, 2021 please click on the Permission Click below to indicate that you will either be opting IN or OUT for PSAT testing. The College Board has changed the testing date from October 14th to January 26th. If you filled out the Permission Click at Gear Up we are asking that you fill it out again for the new January administration.

https://permission.click/aGN1E/us#/information

Please respond back with a "Yes" or a "No" response no later than Monday, November 30th, 2020 so that PSAT tests can be ordered with the College Board.

The PSAT is designed for 11th-grade students. This is a practice test for the SAT. Only 11th-grade students are eligible for National Merit, Commended Scholar, and National Hispanic Scholar status. These awards are based on a student’s performance on test day.Testing will begin at 7:45 and will go until approximately noon on January 26, 2021. All testing will take place on campus in classrooms. CAHS will be covering your cost for the test, however, you MUST indicate on this form your plan to test in order for you to participate. The PSAT tests are ordered from The College Board who has a firm deadline on ordering.

2021/2022 College Admissions

If you are a current senior, please note that Cal State, UC universities and many, many others are no longer requiring the SAT or ACT as a part of the admissions process. Some universities however are offering an SAT on their own campuses with scores that cannot be transferred but are using those results for their own scholarship purposes. Please check with your list of colleges/universities to see what they are requiring for both admissions and for merit scholarships.

Please remember that ALL High School Staff will be celebrating the Christmas holidays with their families, so it is important to get your requests in before the December 17th school break. If you have not made your requests, they must be made ASAP. Teachers and Counselors will be on break and will not be available to help with college applications beginning December 17th, 2020 through January 4th, 2021.

Seniors- College Application Time is Now! Please Review the College Application Info Below:

Seniors requesting transcripts to be sent to colleges: Please make sure you request transcripts through Naviance OR through the Common Application. The Common Application requires you to invite your counselor on the site so that they can upload a transcript on your behalf. Please invite your Academic Counselor as soon as you begin the Common Application.

Please note that Naviance is NOT linked to the Common Application. Naviance is a system designed to send transcripts and letters to all universities that are not on the Common Application. The Common Application is an actual application site while Naviance is not.

If you are using Naviance, here is a link with step by step instructions on how to request letters of recommendation and transcripts through Naviance:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/14NfQu7FKg19XXCi_dddCQdwTmgWTEP_UUnGZUVA_Xkk/edit?usp=sharing

Letters of Recommendation

If you are needing teacher or counselor letters of recommendation, you will need to request them through Naviance, by selecting your recommenders name. The Common Application requires you to input your recommenders email address. Please also ask all recommenders personally. All letters of recommendation need to be requested 2-3 weeks in advance of the deadline. You do NOT need to have completed your portion of the common application before inviting recommenders. Please invite recommenders ASAP so that they have enough time to write letters.

How Applications Are Reviewed

After You Apply

CSU Applications Opened October 1st!

The priority application period for the Fall 2021 semester opens on Thursday, October 1, 2020, and closes on Friday, December 4, 2020. We recommend you start now and encourage you to apply early!

Validation is Here! Students are highly encouraged to find their high school, so they do not need to manually enter their high school coursework, complete a-g matching and ensure validation is properly applied. Students can now search for their high school using the CEEB code. CAHS CEEB code is 054194.

Cal State Apply Submission Review! The application has been updated with a Submission Review page. The page provides key academic and application information that students may need to review. Please be sure to review this information carefully and correct any issues prior to submission.

SAT and ACT Test Scores

  • The CSU has temporarily suspended the use of SAT and ACT test scores for admission purposes. To find more information on the admission requirements for Fall 2021 please visit the First-time Freshman Guidance.

  • If SAT and ACT test scores are submitted, the CSU will use scores for placement in English and mathematics courses. Please visit the CSU Student Success site for additional information on placement. If a student has not taken a test, they can opt out of the Standardized Tests section of Cal State Apply.

CSU Video and Campus Virtual Tour Links

  • A new CSU overview video and virtual tour links for all 23 campuses have been placed in one central location. These are located under the Choosing a Campus section of the Cal State Apply web site.

Reminders & Clarifications

College- Dual Enrollment Coursework - If students have taken college classes while in high school on their own or through a formal dual enrollment program, they should specify on the application that they are graduating high school senior with college credit. Any college courses taken that will appear on a college transcript should be reported on the College Coursework page. For more information please see the College-Dual Enrollment Coursework Guidance.

Don’t miss the deadline to apply for the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). This Program is designed for students who are historically disadvantaged (i.e., low income for several years, first-generation college student, inner-city or migrant family). Some but not all campuses have a deadline of December 4, 2020 for EOP applicants. Even if a student has submitted their application to the CSU, they can still go back into Cal State Apply to indicate they are interested in applying for EOP if they haven’t missed the campus’s deadline. To check the deadline for the campus(es), go to EOP Admission by Term (also available as a PDF). Also, at least one of the recommendations must be from someone who knows the students’ academic history, such as a teacher or counselor. The other recommendation can be from an individual who can comment about student’s potential to succeed in college but cannot be the student or a family member.

DACA, undocumented or AB540 students should enter “None” as their citizenship status. Under “Residency,” they should select “California” as their state of residency if they consider California their home.

There have been changes in impaction on both campuses and degree programs for the 2021-22 academic year. Impaction means that there are more qualified applicants for a program or campus than can be accommodated. For the most current information, visit the Impaction center on Calstate.edu.

CSU/UC & Common Application: Reporting High School Coursework Grades:

For the UC/CSU and Common App schools, students should input grades as semester since CAHS issues 2 final grades per course (not 4 final grades, which can be typical for a quarter system). The "A” portion or “1st half" of a grade will be semester 1-Fall and the "B” portion or 2nd half" of a grade will be semester 2-Spring. The courses for senior year should have a "planned" or "in progress" option to select and those should be marked as semester grades as well.
