All incoming 9th-12th grade students at The Classical Academies must take and pass a math readiness assessment in the spring or summer prior to the academic year in which they wish to enroll in a math course. This assessment ensures students are placed in the appropriate high school math class. Placement in a high school mathematics course depends on passing the necessary prerequisite course and an acceptable score on the readiness assessment.
See below for complete details.
Math I Readiness Assessment results and course placement*
35 or more questions correct — Math I
18–34 questions correct — Math I with support
Math I support is an additional class period in a student’s schedule designed to provide support for successful completion of the student’s Math I coursework.
17 or fewer questions correct – Math Essentials
Math Essentials is designed for students working at a 5th grade level or below
Math II Readiness Assessment results and course placement
42 or more questions correct – Math II
41 or fewer questions correct – Math I
Math III+ Readiness Assessment results and course placement
36 or more questions correct – Math III or above
35 or fewer questions correct – Math II
*As noted in the policy above, placement in a high school mathematics course depends on passing the necessary prerequisite course and an acceptable score on the readiness assessment.
Assessment Attempts:
A student can take the math readiness assessment up to two times, with different versions of the test.
If the student does not pass after two attempts, they are encouraged to take the assessment for the next lower-level math course. Based on their score, the student will then be placed in the lower-level course.
In certain cases, if a student narrowly misses passing on their second attempt, they may be given additional study time and allowed to take the assessment a third time. However, it is important to note that students who need a third attempt to pass typically struggle in that math course, as the readiness test assesses basic skills required for success.
10th-12th Grade Placement:
Incoming 10th-12th grade students will not be placed in a math course for which they already have high school credit.
Instead, the readiness test results will identify any gaps in prerequisite skills so that teachers can provide targeted support at the beginning of the school year.
Practice Assessments:
Practice versions of the math readiness assessments are available year-round on each high school campus’s website. The practice tests mirror the actual assessment in both question types and the number of questions.
9th Grade Placement:
For students who attended a Classical Academies campus for 8th grade, math placement in 9th grade will be based on several factors:
Math Readiness Assessment results
STAR Assessment results
CAASPP Assessment results
Math course grades
Teacher recommendations
The Math Readiness Assessment system has significantly reduced the need for students to change math courses after the school year begins. However, some schedule adjustments may still be necessary after fall STAR testing and the first few weeks of math grades are reviewed. High school teachers and counselors will work with students and families to ensure correct placement as quickly as possible.
