A Message from Ms. Hughes

In light of what our country is facing, the Counseling Team will be putting together a resource folder on Tolerance, Equity and how to speak to your kids about the current events. Our goal is to help and support you to raise our children to be compassionate people who participate as responsible citizens in a democracy Therefore, we need to find ways to talk with them about the thorny issues that we struggle with as a country.

These resources and more are available on The Counseling Department Group Page, Access Code: 2B5D5-ZWVCX

California Parent and Youth Helpline

The California Department of Social Services is supporting Parents Anonymous in the launch of the new California Parent and Youth Helpline, which provides support and resource referrals to parents and youth during the COVID-19 pandemic. The service is available seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call or text 1-855-4-A-PARENT (855-427-2736) for services in English, Spanish, and other languages. Please share this resource with your students and families. For more information, visit caparentyouthhelpline.org/.

For many young people, sheltering at home means missing milestones and public recognition of their achievements. This is especially true for seniors graduating from high school and college. Attached is a great article from NPR if you have or are a Senior feeling all the feelings this quaranine is bringing us.

Also remember that I am here to listen and support. I am hosting virtual support sessions for students, through Google Hangouts or over the phone.

To connect, simply fill out the CAHS Counseling Referral Form. Within 24 “school” hours (Monday-Friday 8am-3pm) of the referral being received I will personally connect to you or your student through Schoology to set up an appointment of their choice.

Take Care and Be Safe!

CAHS Class of 2020 Studio Graduation Guidelines

We have finalized our overall plan to honor you and your accomplishments on June 6, 2020, as we celebrate this important milestone in your high school career at CAHS. We want to provide graduates and their families more details specifically regarding the graduation process and Commencement Ceremony with our “Caiman Caravan”. We are pleased to announce the graduates will be allowed to leave the vehicle! Please see updated information below and highlighted in yellow! -Once a Caiman, Always a Caiman

June 6, 2020 Graduation Caiman Caravan, Diplomas, Photo Opportunity

Graduation Code of Conduct

By participating in the graduation celebration, you agree to abide by the following:

  • One vehicle per family please. (If your student belongs to two households, two vehicles will be allowed to travel together in line.)

  • There will not be standing room for additional family or friends but the event will be livestreamed on Instagram.

  • Because we want to be mindful of our neighbors, all vehicles are expected to follow the traffic routes marked on the streets.

  • With the exception of the graduate, all vehicle occupants and personal items must remain in the vehicle at all times.

  • There will be no restroom facilities available.

  • Graduates should arrive dressed in their cap and gown. Caps may be decorated and personal regalia (i.e. leis) will be allowed provided they are school-appropriate.

  • Social distancing rules will be enforced throughout the event.

  • All other campus regulations remain in effect (no smoking, no alcohol, no fireworks or confetti poppers, etc.).

Process

Before June 6:

Each graduate should print out their name (phonetically spelled) on a 3x5 card. (Please use your appointment card.) Have this card with you when you exit your vehicle.

At your assigned time on June 6:

  1. Please arrive at your assigned time slot on your appointment card.

  2. The graduate should sit in the front right passenger seat if possible.

  3. Directions: From Broadway, please enter the queuing lane on Pennsylvania Ave. You will be driving clockwise around the campus turning right on Juniper Ave., right on Valley Parkway, right on Kalmia Ave, and then a final right on Pennsylvania Ave. before turning into the Front Driveway in front of the school. (See Map Below)

  4. After turning into the parking lot, graduates will exit the vehicle with their 3x5 name card in hand.

  5. Graduates will pick up their diploma cover and place their 3x5 name card on the table.

  6. Graduates will walk onto the stage when their name is called and will have a professional photo taken. (Digital photos will be made available free to graduates and their family.)

  7. After the professional photo is taken, the car will pull up next to the stage to take personal photos. (Your family photographer should sit on the driver’s side).

  8. Graduates will proceed to the diploma table where they will receive their official diploma before getting back in their vehicle.

  9. Families are encouraged to honk, decorate their vehicles, and celebrate with their graduate from within their vehicle!

Our Campus Supervisors and Administration will be present to ensure an honorable, safe, and enjoyable experience for all of our graduates and their families.

College and Career

SENIORS & JUNIORS: In order for you to graduate and/or to get the courses you requested for next year, you must get us your Community College Transcripts, or other institutional transcripts, such as BYU, ASAP. Palomar College will close out the Spring semester the week of May 18.

IMPORTANT: If you are an AP student and run into testing issues on test day (technical or otherwise) please call this number: College Board Student Hotline - 888-225-5427

Please log in to your College Board account as soon as possible to check on the following:

1. That your email is a current working email account with the College Board

2. Review each of the AP exams that you are signed up for this year. Remember signing up for AP exams this year was a TWO part process:

1. You must have paid on Total Registration

2. You must have signed into your AP classroom/classrooms with the AP classroom access code/codes given to you by each of your AP teachers. This is how College Board AP exams were ordered

Below are some important AP exam and College Board changes designed to help and support students this school year:

What Do I Need to Do?

Please make certain that the College Board has your up to date e-mail address as this is where the AP exam/exams will be sent to you. The email used should be one that you check frequently and be one that can receive emails from an "outside sender". Students should plan to update their CB email if needed to an active, personal email address they check regularly. Please do this as soon as possible.

If you have questions regarding your email account please log in to your College Board account and/or contact the College Board directly at 866-315-6068. Due to privacy issues, the counseling department cannot view your College Board account or make any new changes to your personal account.

  • Traditional face-to-face exam administrations will not take place. Students will take a 45-minute online free-response exam at home.

  • Some students may want to take the exam sooner rather than later, while the content is still fresh. Other students may want more time to practice. For each AP subject, there will be 2 different testing dates. However, we do not have those testing dates available to us yet. These dates and more details will be announced in early April.

  • Please visit https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/coronavirus-updates for more information and helpful resources as you prepare for AP exams.

Any requested cancellations of AP exams through Total Registration can only be refunded after the last AP exam is taken on June 5th.

California State Update

The entire California State University system is taking all the necessary steps to mitigate the disruptions caused by COVID-19 while ensuring the health and safety for our students, faculty, staff and communities.

Please be assured that all CSU campuses are prepared to be as flexible as possible when working with fall 2020 applicants on meeting admission requirements and selection. This flexibility will vary by campus and potentially by major applied due to impaction. Although there has been disruption, as campuses transition to some or all staff working remotely, processing of applications and communications is still taking place. We would encourage fall 2020 applicants to continue to check their email and campus portals regularly.

If students have specific questions, they can contact campuses via email. Campus contact information can be found at: https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/Pages/contact-a-campus.aspx. We would encourage applicants to contact campuses via email and be patient while awaiting a response.

As more information becomes available we will send additional updates.
