PSAT: Tuesday, January 26th, 2021

If you signed your 11th-grade student up for the PSAT in the Fall through our Permission Click, then your 11th-grade student is scheduled to take the PSAT on Tuesday, January 26th. If you received an email from the Counseling team, then this is confirmation that your 11th-grade student is signed up to take the PSAT on that day. If you decide you do NOT want your student to test for any reason, please make sure that you have responded to the email confirmation that you received letting us know. This is not a required test.


Freshmen, sophomores, and seniors, and any juniors not testing should plan for a home study/asynchronous day on Tuesday, January 26th.


Testing will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will last until approximately 12:15 p.m. Students should plan to arrive at the high school no later than 7:45 in order for check-in. Check-in will begin no earlier than 7:30 a.m. Please plan to enter at the back entrance of the high school. Students can be dropped off either on Pennsylvania Avenue or may park in the student parking lots. There will not be drop off available in the back parking lot. Staff members will temperature check each student upon arrival. Additionally, we will plan for social distancing and will expect all students to wear masks at all times. This includes both during testing and on any of the scheduled testing breaks.


It is important that your child is not late for school. Students will not be permitted to take the test if they walk in late and testing has already begun.

Students who are absent that day will not be able to retake the test. January 26th is the national testing date, so we are not able to reschedule testing.

Community Service Reminder and Link

Community Service Requirements for All Studio Students (Grades 9-12)

Every student at Classical Academy High School must complete community service hours as part of his/her graduation requirements. Each school year that students attend CAHS they are required to log 37.5 hours. Each 37.5 hours that is logged and will be awarded 2.5 credits/year for up to a total of 10 credits at the end of four years.


Students transferring to CAHS will be required to complete 37.5 hours of community service for each year attended. Community service is a great resume builder as colleges and universities review student applications for admissions.

Hours Required by Year:

  • 1 year = 37.5 hours or 2.5 credits

  • 2 years = 75 hours or 5 credits

  • 3 years = 112.5 hours or 7.5 credits

  • 4 years = 150 hours or 10 credits

Students Must:

  • Complete the work for no compensation of any type. It must be volunteer work.

  • Submit hours and work done. You can enter time completed in groups if done for the same place/organization. Put total hours completed for the dates worked.

  • Submit supervisor name and phone for verification purposes.

  • Complete the work while a student at CAHS. Hours can start accumulating the summer before freshman year and need to be completed before graduation.

Upcoming Course Selection Information

2021/2022 Course Selections are right around the corner!

The Counseling Department will be virtually releasing a grade-specific course selection presentation for current Studio 9th-11th grade students and parents. These informational videos will be available to view on Monday, February 1st at 8am. Additionally, the Academic Counselors will be holding virtual Q&A meetings on Friday February, 5th and Monday, February 8th. Please see below for your specific grade-level optional Counselor Q&A scheduled time.

At this time, we are asking that parents hold their questions until these course selection presentation videos are released and have been viewed. The counselors are busy planning and making important decisions regarding what will be offered next year.

2021/2022 Studio Course Selection Procedures:

  • These course selection grade-specific videos will be released for viewing on Monday, February 1st at 8am via email.

  • Parents and students are strongly encouraged to watch these important videos together.

  • After viewing the grade-specific video, course selection requests for the 2021-2022 school year can be submitted immediately online. The course selection link will be included in the February 1st email. Parents will have until Tuesday, February 9th by midnight to discuss class choices with students and submit their course selection online.

  • There will not be individual meetings; instead, parents and students are invited and encouraged to watch these virtual course selection presentations online. If parents or students have specific additional questions after viewing their grade-specific course selection video, please plan to attend one of the optional Counselor Q&A’s below:

Learning Center Academic Assistance

Does your student need additional academic Help?

CAHS Studio students are invited to attend our Learning Center to complete morning zoom classes on campus.

Learning Center Hours - 7:50am (0 period), 8:40am (1st period) - 12:00pm - Tuesdays (12:30pm - Cohort) Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

New Extended Learning Center Hours:

Monday - 1pm-4pm

Tuesday - 7:45am - 4pm

Wednesday - 7:45am- 4pm

Thursday - 7:45am - 12:15pm

Students are expected to stay until 12:00pm unless a parent calls in to dismiss the student early.

Each student should bring a fully charged Chromebook/Laptop computer with headphones or earbuds.

A few rules to follow:

COVID-19 safety procedures will be fully enforced

  • Industry standards for frequent cleaning

  • Health screening including symptom and temperature check

  • Masks for ALL staff & students (unless outside and distanced)

  • Social distancing - 6 feet

  • Hand sanitizer for students

  • Limited to NO visitors on campus

  • Isolation and quarantine

  • Designated student entry/exit and traffic flow

  • No loitering on campus

We also suggest our students attend teacher office hours for extra instruction. Contact each individual teacher for times of office hours.

Virtual College Visits:

Colleges have been reaching out to set up visits via Zoom with CAHS students. Please log in to Naviance for all upcoming virtual college visits designed for CAHS students only and for access to register for the Zoom link to attend. These virtual college visit dates and Zoom links will also be posted on Schoology under the Academic & College Counseling page.


Please note, there are hundreds of virtual college visits currently available for students to attend. You can find these virtual visit opportunities for all students across the country by going to the “Colleges” tab in your Naviance Student account and then clicking on “College Events”.

2021/2022 College Admissions


If you are a current senior, please note that Cal State, UC universities and many, many others are no longer requiring the SAT or ACT as a part of the admissions process. Some universities however are offering an SAT on their own campuses with scores that cannot be transferred but are using those results for their own scholarship purposes. Please check with your list of colleges/universities to see what they are requiring for both admissions and for merit scholarships.

Seniors requesting transcripts to be sent to colleges: Please make sure you request transcripts through Naviance OR through the Common Application. The Common Application requires you to invite your counselor on the site so that they can upload a transcript on your behalf. Please invite your Academic Counselor as soon as you begin the Common Application.


Please note that Naviance is NOT linked to the Common Application. Naviance is a system designed to send transcripts and letters to all universities that are not on the Common Application. The Common Application is an actual application site while Naviance is not.

Letters of Recommendation

If you are needing teacher or counselor letters of recommendation, you will need to request them through Naviance, by selecting your recommenders name. The Common Application requires you to input your recommenders email address. Please also ask all recommenders personally. All letters of recommendation need to be requested 2-3 weeks in advance of the deadline. You do NOT need to have completed your portion of the common application before inviting recommenders. Please invite recommenders ASAP so that they have enough time to write letters.


CSU Applications: The application cycle has now closed for the CSU’s. CSU Fall 2020 application opened on October 1st and many closed on December 15th. Visit Calstate.edu/apply.


Many California State University campuses have extended their application window past December 15th. There are still several CSU options available for Fall 2021.

In keeping with previous efforts to provide current and prospective students and families with information, clarity and time to plan, the California State University (CSU) has announced that it is planning for an anticipated return to delivering courses primarily in-person starting with the fall 2021 term.


Application fee waivers are still available for students who qualify. Fee waivers are available to applicants pursuing their first bachelor’s degree and consider CA their permanent home. In addition, to income information there are several fields used to determine fee waiver eligibility. To view the eligibility criteria, mistakes to avoid and the detailed Application Fee Waiver Checklist please visit: https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/paying-for-college/Pages/fee-waiver.aspx. Applicants who qualify are be able to apply for up to four campuses without paying any application fees.

Application fee waiver appeals are also still available. If a student’s family has experienced a significant change in income between 2019 income, reported on their application, and 2020 they may qualify for an application fee waiver appeal. Fee waiver appeals are handled by the individual CSU campuses. The student would need to contact each campus(es) they are interested in applying. UC Applications: The application cycle has now closed for the UC’s. UC Fall 2021 applications opened on November 1st and closed on December 4th . CSU Applications are now closed!

CSU/UC & Common Application: Reporting High School Coursework Grades:

For the UC/CSU and Common App schools, students should input grades as semester since CAHS issues 2 final grades per course (not 4 final grades, which can be typical for a quarter system). The "A” portion or “1st half" of a grade will be semester 1-Fall and the "B” portion or 2nd half" of a grade will be semester 2-Spring. The courses for senior year should have a "planned" or "in progress" option to select and those should be marked as semester grades as well.

SENIORS- IMPORTANT FAFSA AND CAL GRANT INFO

Reminder to all Seniors and their parents: The FAFSA (The Free Application for Federal Student Aid)/ CA Dream Act (for immigrant minors) Application sites opened October 1st, and will be based on the prior, prior tax year. We recommend all college-bound students apply. In order to be considered for the CAL Grant, the FAFSA/CA Dream Act Application must be completed no later than March 2nd. Keep in mind that funds are limited, so please consider getting it filled out earlier. Remember to create your WebGrant 4 Students account to check the status of your Cal Grant eligibility and to have access to receive your awarded funds 7-10 days after submitting your FAFSA application.

If you are currently in an AP course, you should have joined EACH of your individual AP College Board classrooms. All AP teachers have been sharing their AP classroom join codes for each of your AP classes.

1. Sign up to get on the waitlist to PAY by credit or by check for each of the AP exams you plan to take. You will either be approved or denied.

2. If approved then you will pay on Total Registration and they will send you a receipt of your payment. You are NOT signed up to take an AP exam without a total registration receipt and will have a NO marked on the exam indicator/exam order portion of your College Board classroom.

IMPORTANT

NEW: Once a student has paid on Total Registration, counselors will be notified of your payment and YOUR COUNSELOR will then mark YES on the exam indicator/order exam of your College Board AP classroom site. All students can verify if they have an exam being ordered by checking their College Board accounts.

The first deadline that incurred a late fee was October 2nd. This late College Board fee is now $40. The high school order for all AP Classes was FINALIZED on November 11th. Any late registrations allowed after that date, will result in a $40 late fee per exam IF approved.

If so, it is important that you request an official transcript to be sent to the CAHS Registrar, Elenna Uribe as soon as your December grades at the Community College post. No credit will be given until this official transcript has been received.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

If you are still needing Community Service hours, please see below for some ideas:

- Clean out old blankets, sheets, towels and donate to an animal shelter (knowing the shelters are closed or by appointment only, students can prepare donations)

- Foster an animal

- Clean out closets and donate to Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other thrift stores accepting donations

- Video or record reading to a younger sibling

- Tutor younger students online

- Write cards or letters to people in need of comfort

- Pick up trash around your neighborhood following social distancing rules

STEM Student Opportunity:Triton Engineering Student Council at UC San Diego- “Enspire”.

Enspire is a full-day event on January 30th, 2021 designed to encourage students to pursue college-level education. This year, they will be inviting around 130 high school students to participate in several STEM activities virtually on Zoom that seek to be engaging as well as give a glimpse of the concepts taught in UC San Diego’s introductory engineering courses.

Social Emotional Counseling

In honor of the recent holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and as we approach the month of February and Black History month, we would like to take a few minutes to reflect on the significance of this holiday and begin the difficult, uncomfortable, and necessary conversation about racism, oppression, and social justice. We do not pretend to have all the answers, our goal is open up dialogue in order to begin to understand each other better, our different experiences, and grow in empathy. Virtual Calm Room

We created this Virtual Calm Room to serve as a break and to help you find new ways to manage strong emotions and build resilience. These resources will hopefully allow you to reset back to a calm state of mind and body. We encourage you to make it a priority to care for yourself in healthy ways. There are a lot of options in the Virtual Calm Room and not all coping strategies will feel right, so we encourage you to explore some and find what works for YOU

If you would like to set up an appointment to talk with the social emotional counselor, please fill out the Counseling Referral Form. In addition to phone and Zoom appointments, we are now able to have appointments on campus in the counseling office!

Community Events

Breakfast Program

The Classical Academies participates in a school meal program by offering a nutritious breakfast meal every school day. Our breakfast program is available to all students that are on campus longer than two hours for an educational purpose. Prepackaged Breakfast Kits are available on campus at various times throughout the day to allow for flexible schedules.

The Breakfast Kits must be ordered online at https://classicalacademies.boonli.com by noon the day before your student is on campus. Instructions on how to order are available HERE.

When your student arrives on campus, they will be able to choose from the available prepackaged Breakfast Kits. Each Breakfast Kit includes a breakfast cereal, dried fruit, unsweetened regular or flavored applesauce, graham crackers, and low-fat milk. All Breakfast Kits include a spoon and napkin. The cost is $3.00 per Breakfast Kit. Eligible students may receive meals free of charge if qualified. Please contact the school Registrar if you have questions about eligibility.

School Meals Available at Community Locations

On October 9, 2020, the USDA extended the summer grab-and-go school meal program to encompass the entire school year. Children are eligible to receive meals regardless of school or district of attendance. School districts are working hard to implement the new guidelines and meet local needs. Locally, we are aware of meal services in Escondido, Oceanside, and Vista. Please visit their websites for more information. Sports Update

Dear Caiman Families,

We are elated to share some great news with you and your student-athletes regarding CAHS sports.

First of all, we are proud to announce the hiring of Coach Aaron Vermilyea as our interim Head Coach for our Varsity baseball team. Over the past several years, Coach Vermilyea has done a fantastic job as Head Coach of our JV baseball team. He will be a great fit for us during this season as we work towards growing our program while maintaining the excellence that has been established with our CAHS baseball program and community.

Secondly, as of today the Stay At Home Order has been officially lifted. In short, what that means for us at this moment, is that our Cross Country, Swim & Dive, and our Mountain Bike teams will be officially starting Feb 1st and allowed to participate in competitions.

Please see the additional information provided below to understand the broader scope of where we are when it comes to CIF sports in regards to our current situation:

  • All CIF sports are determined by the tier assignments based on our county covid tier status.

  • Competitions for each sport are not allowed until our county is in the assigned tier, however, sports can start practicing once they reach the point in which their sport is within one tier level of their assigned tier.

  • Physical conditioning, practice, skill building, and training that can be conducted outdoors are currently authorized for all sports regardless of county tier status.

  • Athletes and coaches may only participate in one team (cohort) at a time. The only exception is Track & Field and Cross Country. These two sports are considered one cohort and can compete in both sports at the same time.

  • Athletes may not compete in the same CIF sport and competitive sport at the same time.

  • You can find the start dates and tier level for all other sports HERE.

We understand that the release of the guidance will create a lot of questions. CIF is asking for our patience as they work with our section leaders to review the impact the new guidance from the California Department of Health has on the CIF-San Diego Section and our plan for the start of additional sports. We will pass on any updates we receive.

As of now, we will be moving forward with the CIF scheduled start of Cross Country and Swim & Dive on February 1st. Our mountain biking team will also be starting. We want to assure you that all workouts will follow state, county, and CIF safety protocols and procedures. Details will be communicated by coaches with the start of season announcements. All workouts are optional and, until the "stay at home" order is lifted, there will be no competitions against other schools or cohorts.

  1. Make sure your athlete is cleared to play by completing their sports clearance paperwork HERE.

  2. Download our Caiman Sports App or go to caimansports.com to view all start of season announcements by checking out the "News" page of any sport.

  3. Make sure and fill out the athlete interest form so that your coach will be able to reach out to you with start of season announcements. The link to those forms can be found on our Sport Info Page.
