HK Reading Project is an original service initiative founded at CIS to help ethnic minority families improve their Cantonese in order to keep up with their classes and integrate into the local community.
We create picture books in Chinese, using keywords and terms from textbooks, integrating colourful illustrations and glossaries containing English explanations and jyutping romanisation to provide enriching, level-appropriate language support. We also engage in teaching sessions for 1 hour per week using these books to provide the beneficiaries with a fun, enriching and impactful language support experience.

1) We aim to have volunteers create 1 book per month.
2) We wish to help improve our mentee(s)' Cantonese skills by designing and tailoring our own lesson plans to suit their ability.

Book creation: indirect service + creativity
Teaching lessons: direct service + creativity (for creating lesson plans)
One-off opportunity: You are allowed to sign up for our service as a one-off/short-term CAS to create picture books for us! Please just indicate to any of the student leaders (see below) if this is your case.
