Youth Empowered: Refugees aims to help improve the lives of young refugee children living Hong Kong through the help of other local youths. Working in collaboration with HandsOn Hong Kong as well as Christian Action, Youth Empowered: Refugees provide weekly tutorial sessions for refugee children aged 11-13 with the mentors being us youths. Along with these weekly tutoring sessions, monthly/bi-monthly cultural exchange sessions will also be provided in an attempt to improve on both the education of these children as well as make them feel more welcome in a foreign place.
Our goal
Our main goal is to help create care and support for refugee children in Hong Kong, helping them both in academics as well as understanding more about Hong Kong. As well as creating lasting relationship between volunteer and beneficiary.
Expectations
Virtual Plan: With the pandemic we are currently looking to start off our service program online. For one hour every weekend, volunteers will be paired up with a few other volunteers (possibly not within our school) as well as be in a group with a few refugees. These meetings will be held through zoom and will be mainly a homework help between the refugees and the volunteers. Volunteers will mainly be helping with Science, Math and Chinese as subjects. Volunteers should view their role as less of a teacher and more of a mentor.
In Person Plan: Similar to how our program will run online, however instead we will meet in person at the Christian Action Head Office in Choi Wan (tentative) for the hour instead. In person cultural exchanges such as movie days, hikes, going to Hong Kong landmarks will also become bi-monthly occurrences with the loosening of restrictions.
Planning Time: Friday Lunch Meetings
Service Day: Sunday morning (likely 10am-11am) OR Wednesday 3:30 - 4:30 (subject to change)
Location: Choi Wan, Christian Action Head Office (tentative)
