In HK, there are over 14,000 asylum seekers who are not allowed to work, and they only receive $1200/month in food vouchers. In collaboration with RUN, an organisation dedicated to rehabilitating refugees with sports and education, we will be offering programs for students to be able to support refugee kids online and in person. Our online programs will consist of raising awareness, organising fundraising initiatives and also online homwork help for the kids. Our in-person sessions will consist of us being able to visit the organisation to help the refugee kids by hosting a sports program and offering homework support. Since the start of the pandemic, Hong Kong has demanded virtual learning, the amount of resources that are accessible becomes even more important for the convenience and success of Hong Kong students. This is partially caused by the lack of virtual learning materials they have, such as headphones and computers. This particular situation will likely last for a long while due to the severity of the epidemic, and as a result these students will need material help. Therefore, we strive to make the experience (as students and children under the situation of the pandemic) easier for these refugee children by providing useful resources they need and supporting them through their growth.
Our goal
Our goal for RUN this year is to be able to help and support the refugees in the best way that we can - by encouraging them to improve their physical and mental strength through our sports and tutoring programs either in person or online. We hope to share our love for sports with these children, unite the community and nurture them through sport, food, friendship and education.
Expectations
COVID-19 (Virtual) : Volunteers will meet once a week on monday's from 4:30-6:00 for the online homework support programme. Addtionally, volunteers would be asked to help with any additional work that needs to be done for example posters, intiatives etc.
Responsibilities
In person plan: Every Monday, we will meet at the organisation in Aberdeen to help with the Refugee kids sports program and homework support. Homework support sessions will take place from 4-5pm, and the refugee kids program will be from 5-6:15pm. It is important that we increase accessibility to sports for these refugee children as they typically have no means to access sports in HK. These sports can help them to overcome trauma improve their wellbeing overall, and the homework support will help those with learning difficulties.
Planning Time: Occasional planning meeting, mostly contact through Whatsapp.
