In collaboration with Google CS First Curriculum and Kids4Kids, every week CIS students travel to an underprivileged local school in Kowloon (Sir Ellis Kadoorie School) and teach Scratch and Python (Programming Languages) to students who are willing and eager to learn more about the programming world. We hope that everyone has the opportunity to explore the world of computer science, to learn, and to create.
Volunteers are paired up with students at Sir Ellis Kadoorie in order to offer high quality and engaging programming lessons in Scratch and Python. The students at SEK will have the opportunity to learn and discover new programming languages and be granted the autonomy to develop their own creative projects.
Our Goal
Our goal for 2020-21is to maintain our weekly sessions at Sir Ellis Kadoorie School, either in person or online, to hopefully be able to provide underprivileged students at SEKS a basic understanding of how programming works, and the knowledge as to how to write their own code. We also plan to collaborate with other initiatives to refurbish and donate computers to those in need.
Expectations
Service takes place every week on Thursday Afternoon from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm. Given current circumstances, teaching sessions will take place Online over Zoom. Volunteers will be paired with a student from SEK, though this may vary depending on the ratio between volunteers and students. This 1 to 1 model will allow volunteers to have the opportunity to personalize their lesson plans to best suit their student, generate new and unique ideas, and be closely involved in their student's learning process over the year.
