Inspired by The Atlantic and The Guardian, The Odyssey is an investigative journal that seeks to vocalise and spread intellectual understanding about deep rooted socio-economic and political issues entrenched in our Hong Kong society. Students, armed with their topic of interest, will be provided with unlimited autonomy to conduct investigations: these investigations will consist of primary and secondary research and interviews. Student writers will be responsible for submitting a bimonthly, high quality article. Student writers are also encouraged to express their own sentiment towards the topic of interest.
Our goal
Goal 1: To publish five bi-monthly journals consisting of high quality articles that address social, economic and political issues in Hong Kong. These articles convey the sentiments of the writers, of which is predicated on credible research and investigation.
Goal 2: To have a website that emulates those of prominent media organisations.
Goal 3: To have a total of 3000 reads by the end of the year (if trackable).
Goal 4: To establish a clear organisation structure
Goal 5: To familiarise writers, investigators and editors with the process of investigative journalism.
Goal 6: Our organisation should gain considerable prestige - the level of prestige should be similar to Xiao Hua, if not greater.
Expectations
The process of 'volunteering', depending on the role of the student, will be flexible. Students will strive to complete a bi-monthly(2 month) journal - consisting of multiple articles - that will be digitally published on our website. Our organisation is currently recruiting students who are interested in the following roles:
Writers/Investigators: Writers will be responsible for writing an article on the topic of interest. Investigators will be responsible for conducting research - in the form of interviews with relevant groups and individuals, or online sources - to increase understanding and develop opinions.
NOTE: writers are highly encouraged to participate in research and interviews with their fellow investigators. This allows writers to develop their own opinions, and to make the writing process less bureaucratic.
Editors/Social Media Manager: Responsible for providing quality edits and suggestions for the writers. Editors will simultaneously manage our social media platforms (Instagram and our website).
Graphic Designer: Responsible for designing cover drawings for articles and our journal. Graphic designers will also be responsible for formatting articles.
