Including scaffolds, tools and supports alongside the learning goal saves time and sets students up for success. In the goal, you might add the phrase" using...." to indicate which tools are available.
Tools and supports may include:
an interactive support "...using your writing partner"
a sentence stem support "...using the phrases from the cause and effect chart posted on the wall"
an exemplar support "...using the example lab report we wrote together" OR "...using the graph from problem #2"
a graphic support "...using the double bubble map"
a sensory support "...using the model of a Carbon atom" OR "using the unifix cubes"
Listen to the scaffolding examples podcast by Paula Johnson, M.A., an IDRA education associate and former high school math teacher. The scaffolds she describes can be called out in your learning target.
Sentence frame for a learning goal that includes the tools & supports.
I can ... by... using.... "
Ask yourself, "Which thinking skills best match what your students will be doing? Then check the standard and Academic Language Functions.
For example, in my 6th grade social studies class, we are learning to “Interpret, apply, and communicate geographic data to justify potential solutions to problems in the Western Hemisphere at the local, state, national, and global levels”. I find the Academic Language Function of “Justifying and Persuading” on page 11 of the Academic Language Toolkit. Bingo! I want to include justify as my power verb since it is in both the standards and the toolkit.
