Levels PK-12 Content - Any
The “Do Now” is a short (three to five minute) activity that the students begin working on as soon as they come into the classroom. The students should come to expect it and they should be able to complete the activity without any instruction from the teacher or having to discuss anything with their classmates. To be most effective and to make expectations as clear as possible, students should expect a “do now” every day and they should be able to find it in the same place every day so that there is no question as to what they should be doing as class begins. The activity has to require a written product to be most effective so that the teacher can easily hold students accountable for following directions and participating. Finally, the activity should be a review of a previous lesson and possibly lead into the new learning. Since the "Do Now" is short, it can be easily sorted to identify which students have misconceptions and might need reteaching.
Tips for Planning an Effective Do Now:
Keep it short
Include a written response
Aim for higher level thinking
Consistent routine, placement & format
Pro Tip! Resist the urge to turn the "Do Now" into a lesson. It's a quick management routine and a formative assessment. You can look at the results to guide next steps for your teaching, but beware not to turn a 3 minute activity into a 10 minute lesson.
