Levels PK-12 Content - Any
Use this technique to show you what students are thinking and what they have learned at the end of a lesson. Before students leave (for lunch, the end of the day, their next class, or are transitioning to another subject area), they hand you a “ticket” filled out with an answer to a question, a solution to a problem, or a response to what they’ve learned. Exit Tickets help you assess if students have “caught what you taught” and plan for the next lesson or unit of instruction. A good exit ticket can tell whether students have a superficial or in-depth understanding of the material. This tool can be used daily or weekly, depending on the unit being taught. It usually happens at the end of the lesson, but could also happen mid way through before independent practice. Exit tickets should not be graded but used as a reflection tool for the teacher so see students' misconceptions about the lesson or content and adjust the teaching.
There are 4 key types of exit tickets (Marzano).
Formative: "What are you most confused about regarding what we did in class today?" or "Rate your understanding of problem # 7"
Self Analysis: "How hard did you work today? Explain why you think you worked at the level you did."
Feedback on Instruction: "How did the anchor chart and Think Pair Share today help you understand the content? What is something I could do to help you better understand this content?" (full Marzano article here)
In addition to paper pencil slips, you may also consider tech tools for exit tickets. A few favorites are Pear Deck, Explain Everything, Padlet or Flipgrid.
There are endless exit ticket strategies and templates.

If you creating an exit ticket with closed-ended questions, Google Forms will autograde it for you. Create your quiz and click the gear (settings) button. Choose the “Quizzes” tab and turn on “Make this a quiz”. You have some options in that window. Then, go through your questions and select the correct answer (your answer key). Less grading means you can spend more meaningful time giving feedback.
