Teachers model all the time! The Reteach with Modeling, strategy, however, is an intentional teacher demonstration of a focused skill, paired with a think aloud that makes the accompanying metacognition clear for students. Effective modeling makes the thinking, and not just the procedure, clear to students. Modeling should include a clear listening/note-taking task for students, and end with a “you do” application of the skill by students. Modeling is a necessary reteaching strategy when data shows that fewer than half of students have a skill, and it can be used in many contexts.
The Modeling Lesson template is in the DO IT section of the BVSD DDI Protocol .
Do not get distracted by taking responses and suggestions from students; it is easy to get off track, lose focus, and lengthen the modeling time. Be sure students are clear that this is their time to learn from you. You might need to say something like, “This is my time to show you exactly how I do it. You’ll have your turn soon.”
