Total Response Signals are cues students can use to indicate they are ready to respond to a question or move on to a new material. Response signals allow students to prepare for an participate in oral and written tasks in a non threatening way, and they provide an effective tool for gauging understanding in real time. (Seidlitz, p.47).
There are three elements of an effective total response signal:
TOTAL - They include every student in the classroom. Total means everyone.
RESPONSE - Every student will think of their response. After the question is posed, students must have wait time to formulate their response.
SIGNAL - Once students are prepared to respond, they provide a signal, which must be clear enough so teachers can immediately survey and see who is ready.
There are 4 types of signals:
WRITTEN - Students write responses and hold them up.
READY - Students show they have finished a task or are ready for what comes next.
CHOICE - Students show their response to a specific set of choices.
RANKING - Students show their relative agreement/disagreement.
