The Mark Up Method is an active reading strategy that asks students to think critically about their reading. It helps students determine the essential information in a reading passage, isolating it visually from the rest of the surrounding text. While reading the text, students analyze ideas, evaluate ideas, and circle and underline essential information relevant to one’s reading purpose. (Seidlitz, p.89)
Students read and mark text with the following coding system:
"text" to show something that is already known
? to show a concept is confusing
! to show something is surprising
+ to show a concept that is new
x to show something that they disagree with or that challenges current thinking
(Echevarria et al., 2017)
