Levels PK-12 Content - Any
This discussion technique gives students the opportunity to respond to questions and/or discuss information with a variety of peers in a structured manner. Students form two concentric circles and exchange information with a partner until the teacher signals the outer circle to move in one direction, giving each student a new peer to talk to. Pairs can be random, those in the inside or outside circle can be strategically selected based on language proficiency or skill level. Students can also take a piece of work with them to share in an inside/outside circle. This method can be used to gather variety of information, generate new ideas and solve problems.
PRO TIP! During the use of the inside outside circle strategy, the teacher is the facilitator. The teacher works to manage the rotations as well as keep an eye and ear on when students are finished sharing to begin the next rotation. WIth younger students, the teacher may stand in the center of the circle or mark the center at the outside in some way.
