QSSSA is a simple strategy that weaves structured conversation into instruction. So how exactly does a structured conversation happen? It occurs whenever we explicitly plan for students to use sentence frames and intentional questions to engage in a short conversation. Structured conversations allow students to share ideas and learn from one another. (Seidlitz)
QSSSA is a simple structured conversation strategy that is low/no prep and can be incorporated efficiently into any content area to increase student talk and engagement.
In this strategy, the teachers asks a QUESTION and the students give a response SIGNAL when they are ready to answer. Using a sentence STEM, students are asked to SHARE their response with one or more peers. Lastly, the teachers assesses the quality of the discussion by selecting a few students to share their answers with the whole class.
PRO TIP! Start Small by using the same or similar signal and stems until students get really proficient in the routine. Then...change up the signal and the stem.
