In Pairs Check, students are divided into pairs and each pair has two problems/questions/items. Partner A solves the first problem while Partner B is the coach. Then Partner Partner B solves the next problem while Partner B is the coach. The pair them buddy up with a different pair and discuss the 2 items until all 4 agree on the response. Pairs Check allows for total participation and practice in a supportive, low risk way.
1. Establish pairs of students.
2. Give each pair a set of problems.
3. Person one does the first problem, while person two acts as a coach. When they agree on the solution they move to the next problem.
4. Person two does the second problem, while person one acts as a coach. They agree on the
solution.
5. They then check the first two problems with another pair. All four students work to agree on the solution of the first two problems.
6. Repeat steps 3-5 until all problems are solved.
7. Debrief the process using Total Response Signals and Randomize & Rotate.
PRO TIP! Strategically pair students based on proficiency levels, or use a random pair tool such as Flippity. Be cautious about students choosing pairs.
