After partners or small groups of students collaborate, the teacher gives a short amount of time for the group to prepare the speaker tp share. During this time, the group determines their most well thought out response and the speaker practices with the group before sharing with the whole class. (From Small Moves by Nancy Motley p.37-38)
At the end of a collaborative task, regain the students' attention.
Select a speaker from each group (strategically or randomly - shortest hair, born farthest away from this school...).
Set a timer for a short amount of time for the group to "prep the speaker". It might sound like this:
In 3 minutes, person number 3 at each table will share out. Work as a team to make sure your person is ready. Share good ideas and allow the speaker to practice. There are key vocabulary and sentence stems on the screen to support you if needed. Okay -- prep that speaker!
Each speaker shares out to the whole group.
Pro Tip! When supporting multilingual learners to take risks producing language, prepping the speaker gives students the chance for needed social support and oral rehearsal.
