Numbered Heads Together is a cooperative learning strategy that structures discussion in a way that supports all students and prepares each one to share with the class. Groups are formed and given a number 1-6. Then, within each group, members are given a number 1-6. (Ideally, you would have 6 groups of 6, but if you do not have 36 members in the class, divide the students into smaller groups). Since the rules allow only the student whose number is rolled on the die to stand up and respond, group members each orally rehearse their response, building language and incentivizing that all group members are prepared to respond.
Students form small groups by numbering off or from strategic teacher grouping.
The teacher provides think/talk/write time for students to independently think and then write a response to a prompt or problem.
Then, students put their "numbered heads" together to share and either generate multiple credible responses or come to agreement on a response. Students may chart their ideas, log their summaries, etc.
Using a spinner, drawing a number card, or rolling a die, the teacher randomly calls a number from 1 to 4.
All students with the selected number must stand and share their group’s thinking using a public speaking voice.
Mix it up! Once a number has shared, rearrange groups. Call twos together, number that group 1–4, and have them respond to another prompt. The shuffling keeps students moving and working with more classmates, which makes the routine feel like a game.
