Talking Chips is an effective and fun strategy to support students to engage in discussions, while practicing important listening, communication skills as well as awareness of self and others.
Each member of a team receives an equal number of chips (or index cards, tokens, cubes, etc.).
When a team member wishes to talk during the group discussion, that person places a chip into the center of the table or in a cup.
When individuals run out of chips, they cannot talk anymore and practice listening.
The discussion continues until all members of the group have used all of their chips.
PRO TIPS! With younger students, it helps if the chips within a group are different colors so they don't get mixed up between students.
