INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING PRACTICES
INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING PRACTICES
Backwards Design, originally introduced by Wiggins & McTighe back in the late 90's, has 3 steps. The concept is not new, but the impact on teaching & learning is significant.
1. Identify what students will learn.
2.Identify what assessment will show they've learned it.
3. Plan learning experiences.
Why is this better than traditional lesson design focused on a general topic, text, or activity? When you identify the goal and the assessment first, planning lessons become more connected and purposeful and it's easier to eliminate activities that are based on busy work or compliance.
