Stir the Pot (also known as Stir the Room or Stir the Class) is a partner structure in which students move and walk to the music. When the music stops, they find a partner nearby and engage in a partner discussion. This is a great way to share drafts of writing, methods of problem solving, opinions...it works for any content or age and builds community.
Stir the Pot
1. Listen for the music and walk around the room on your own (not following or chasing anyone)
2. When the music stops, put your hand up and high five the person closest to you.
3. Stand back to back with that person and put your hands down. (If you don’t have a partner, keep your hand up and quickly move to another person with his/her hand up)
4. Teacher asks a question and both partners take time to think.
5. Teacher will call who will share first. (i.e person with longest hair, person with a birthday closest to today...)
6. When music starts, say thank you and start walking again.
PRO TIP! When introducing talk structures, attaching one song to each talk structure builds muscle memory for students. For example, if every time you use "Stir the Pot", you play "Pink Panther", students connect the routine to the music and internalize it more quickly.
