Marzano's 6 Step Vocabulary Process, outlined in his classic book, Building Academic Vocabulary (2004), is a comprehensive strategy for learning tier 2 or tier 3 vocabulary. The first 3 steps help introduce the term. The last 3 steps guide students to practice and reinforce the understanding and application of the word.
THE 6 STEPS
1.DESCRIBE: YOU provide a description, explanation or example. (story, sketch, powerpoint)
2. DESCRIBE with words: STUDENTS re-state or re-explain meaning in their own words. (journal, partner structure, whole group)
3. DESCRIBE without words: Ask students to construct a picture, graphic, symbol , or action for the word.
4. DO: Engage students in activities to expand their word knowledge. (add to their notes, use graphic organizer format)
5. DISCUSS: Ask students to discuss vocabulary words with one another using sentence stems.
6. PLAY a game with the word (Jeopardy, Bingo, Charades, Pictionary...)
PRO TIP! A good rule of thumb is to introduce and practice at least 2 new words per lesson (Seidlitz).
