Levels PK-12 Content - Any
Students sometimes struggle with making sense of nonfiction text in content areas, and providing specific strategies for organizing and summarizing can often help. Each content area may require a different approach for students to organize their thinking. Summarization Frames are a simple concept in which you ensure that the frames and stems you use and share match the type of thinking for the content. Ask yourself, "How do mathematicians, scientists, historians, etc. read and write in the real world?" and how can I develop those languae skills in my students?
We all know that while elementary teachers are teachers of all content areas, teachers in 6-12 specialize in content areas in which they have passion, expertise and certification. So are all 6-12 grade teachers responsible for teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening? The answer is yes and no. All 6-12 teachers are helping to further develop literacy skills through the context of your content. How do scientists read, write, speak and listen? How about historians, cartographers, artists, financial analysts and on and on? By using summarization frames as an often referenced visual support in the classroom, all teachers can specialize by developing relevant literacy skills within a content.
